So a carrier is required to kill a drifter... or just such a large amount of cannon fodder as for the fleet to survive longer than the drifter?

Why are people even bothering? There is no benefit to doing so, unless it is just for the challenge.

Or are they just getting caught in the wrong place at the wrong time if a drifter lands on a gate? (Still don't understand the empty cargo fit haulers or shuttles, even a few autopilot interceptors with no aggressive mods)
For a while, a Cerberus was enough to destroy Drifter Battleships. Using a Chimera (and losing it in the process) sure was an option.
But then there came Tiamat 1.3 and the Super Weapon that now appears to have a range that might be like 500km.

Now the probably easiest strategy (that CCP looks like they want to enforce) is: Engage with 2+ players, sacrifice one and then finish the job.

I'm all for cool AI and new tricks. But unless the drifters are just a test-bed for new ultra-powerful, but still defeatable, Concord, I'm not interested.

Anyone can just beef up the range/speed/HP/whatever stats on an NPC and make sure it's harder to kill or harder to survive against. Someone managed to kite the Drifters, so you increase the range on the doomsday? Gee, seems like fair play. That's not so much showing off new intelligent AI. Intelligent AI would disengage, warp away, or do something within it's existing mechanics... not have a developer rewrite its mechanics.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

Be careful what you wish for...
Played Alien: Isolation last night for 4 hours, spent 2.5 hours dying. AI TOO STRONK. When those guys say "Nightmare" they really mean "Nightmare".

Looks like Drifters like fireworks, NEXT STEP: just allow them to loot the wrecks, so the next guy who kills drifter, gets everything what he accumulated. Lol

Agreed! It's no change of the AI but just adjustment of the offensive - and defensive - stats of the NPC.

Series of my observations:

Sisi

Subcaps could survive the Super Weapon.
Increased that damage.
Jam could blinfold the Drifters completely, also preventing the Super Weapon in the Process.
Sensor strength got increased.
It was possible to get the Super Weapon fired without taking damage when your ship was in warp at that exact moment.

TQ
Drifters pointed.
Kiting the Drifters, keeping distance above 200km prevented the Super Weapon from firing.
Range got increased. Got hit 258km away, but some suggest a range of up to 500km.

After all, they're as smart as they were in the beginning.
They attack you when you're 77km or closer to the structure.
They attack you when you're 28km or closer to the Wormhole.
They follow you to where you warp to in the system as long as you're in the same ship.

They just got boosted to ridiculous power.

I noticed that some days ago, but did'nt yet get to investigate that further. They did'nt care for my proximity in the past so it might be that their aggression in this case might be influenced by a drifter present.

One of our goals with The Drifters was to further iterate on the new NPC AI we released with the Circadian Seekers. It has been awesome to see how you all adapt to new challenges and we hope to continue reprogramming the NPCs of New Eden.

This one is finished as far as I can tell. They're just slowly turning it on to see how we responded to each new activity the NPC's do.

This is a finished feature... its called "Alternate way to scrap your ship without getting resources or your half of your fit modules back".

Otherwise there is not actual reason to engage them... though still wondering about all those noncombat haulers and autopilot shuttles and interceptors with no offensive modules that seem to have been killed by them.

Drifters will engage if you get too close to their stuffs.

Huh? Any bot worth its salt will warp out as soon as one of these drops on grid.

Well, maybe its a good way for CCP to detect bots....

Actually, no ISK has been lost to Drifters. All that ISK is safely in the hands of industrialists, who got it when the pilots bought their doomed ships.

Yeah, AI is difficult. So most games go with just making things harder to defeat through overpowering stats. Take a look at boss mobs in just about any game... insane hps, huge damage, but still dumb as a post.

Or often times, AI will cheat with perfect information that players can't always get, or have to work towards getting but can't access instantly. Games that cheat like this are annoying and quickly become un-fun to play. The trick is to let the AI cheat, but subtly such that players don't notice it.

In Eve, Drifters cheat. Concord cheats. Faction police cheat. The latter two we accept as being "the law" and allowed to warp directly to (spawn on) people. And Concord is the be-all end-all punishment for crimes in security space. So their stats can be tough and their damage uber.

But drifters?

There better be a good story on this one why the AI cheats, the devs cheat by buffing them, and they drop nothing.
