Completely different playstyles, and the tristan can be used in a wide variety of ways. If you like shields and guns I'd say Merlin, if you like drones Tristan with guns or neuts, I would reccomend armour fit on Tristan as the shield fits are less good for a beginner (exception if you fly with a shield fleet).

Without knowing your skill levels suggesting fits are a bit hard, but this is my favoured fit;

[Merlin, 3]
Micro Auxiliary Power Core I
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II

Experimental 1MN Afterburner I
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
Medium Shield Extender II
X5 Prototype Engine Enervator

Light Neutron Blaster II, Null S
Light Neutron Blaster II, Null S
Light Neutron Blaster II, Null S

Small Core Defense Field Extender I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I

Welcome to EVE, honey!

Now I wil give you the best advice I can give to a noobie.

First, regardless of what you read and hear it is to you to find out what you like and what you don't like.

Second, as long as you are a noob - as in you have not many skillpoints - try to stay within your starting races of ships and change later when you don't need to worry about fitting stuff and if you have xyz skillbook for a stasis webbifier or the other book for a shield booster.

Third, stay in small - as in affordable to replace - stuff. You will loose alot at first but you will get the hang of it of you find someone who will teach you things that you can do that even you think you couldn't do.

This is for everyone alike:

When you sit in a ship, in a station with your fitting screen open try to imagine what you want your - as in the one you are starring at right now - ship to do.

Then ask yourself, what would be a the best way to do that?

There are a lot of modules to try out and to look at. Imagine in three stages:

Highslot:
Do I want to shoot someone in the face? - short range gun should be good
Do I want to play Tom & Jerry? - long range gun should be good

Medslot:

- Is this a shield or and armor boat?

Your best rule of thumb is:

If your ship has more medslots than low slots, it's safe to say it is meant for shields

If your ship has more lowslots than medslots, it is meant for armor.

Shield: a shield booster or extender(s) go here but I have to share the slot with propulsion (to move around fast), tackling (my opponent should not leave until I kill his boat) and or a stasis web (this boat I wanna shoot needs to slow down a bit so I can shoot it better)

Armor:
I need to share all my slot with propulsion, tackling and or capacitor management

Lowslots:

Shield: everything that I can fit that helps me do more damage goes in here

DAMAGE CONTROL: in 95% of all cases you want that module on your boat

Armor: I need to make the best tradeoffs I can make to fit armor reps or plates or both, damage mods and that suitcase thing e2 is babbling about.

P.S.:

If you meet a starving man who asks for food and you give him food, you will feed him for a day but if you show the man how to fish, you will feed him for a lifetime.

Eve Minions is recruiting.

This is the law of ship progression!

Being in a hurry in this game is usually a bad thing. Take your time to learn the many things that come with PvP in Eve.

If you're going for a Stealth Bomber then the choice between Merlin and Tristan is easy, pick the race which your planned Stealth Bomber will be in. If you're going for the Manticore then pick the Merlin, if you're going for the Nemesis pick the Tristan.

As for 'long range sniper' this isn't as simple as it seems in Eve and most of the times snipers are supplementary dps to a fleet or gang that are useful because it is difficult to get to them and kill them in a fight. Neither the Merlin or Tristan can really work well at conventional 'sniping' ranges. However the Tristan is a popular kiting ship which is similar to sniping in that you want to stay away from your enemies to avoid damage but rather than huge range, you use fast speed to keep away.

Here's a pretty standard kiting Tristan fit:

[Tristan, PvP Kite]

Damage Control II
Drone Damage Amplifier II
Nanofiber Internal Structure II

Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I
Warp Disruptor II
Medium Shield Extender II

[Empty High slot]
[Empty High slot]
[Empty High slot]

Small Polycarbon Engine Housing I
Small Polycarbon Engine Housing I
Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I

Warrior II x3
Hobgoblin II x5
