Am I supposed to come as close as possible in my Mach?

I recently started doing level 4 missions in a Mach, and was wondering how to more effectively use the 800mm ACs? They have a tiny optimal, but a pretty long fall-off. I know how fall-off works, and that I have a 50% chance to hit something at fall-off range. But that means also that the closer I come to optimal, the more damage I'll be doing because of less misses and more accurate hits.

So am I supposed to burn to targets as close as I can get? I don't have much trouble with my tank in most missions, but some missions if I get too close to the rats they're gonna start eating through my shields too quickly to my liking.

How do you fly your Mach for lvl4s?

The falloff curve is not a straight line, at 50% optimal your chance to hit is still about 80% and, as the Mach's falloff is so huge that means minimal loss of damage out to around 40km

While you could get closer to reduce the lost damage further you probably end up losing more in travel time than you're gaining.

Kite when you need tank, bulldoze straight in if you're looking for kill speed. For the former, orbit is usually your friend. For the latter, I don't mind whacking approach, but keep at range is often a better option.

Rinse, repeat. Watch your wallet tick. Then go do something more engaging.

you can do some nice damage at around 40km. I usually use barrage L and stay around 50k.

Here's what I do.

I try pop frigates at 60km+ You still can kill webbers/scrams at 30-35 km or so if you burn away from them to keep your transversal as low as possible.

After that I burn straight for the elite cruisers. If I'm getting closer than 15-20 km or so I move away from them.
I do the same with cruisers and battlecruisers. Again keeping transversal low means more actual dps.

Battleships i approach and move away when i near them to 10 or so km.

When fighting this close it means my 5 med drones can do some dmg as well as they wont have to travel a lot moving from target to target. (usually i only let them out when i kill the battleships as other targets die too quickly anyway)

The method above can be taxing on the tank every now and then.

In cases where the incoming dps is just too high I switch to orbiting to lighten the load on the tank.
