The biggest difference between highsec and lowsec (and every other sec) is Concord. Concord is infallable in delivering punishment based on sec status and is impossible to run from. Lowsec only has gate and station guns, which can be prepared for ahead of time. It kind of is a cliff of relative safety once you jump off. If you are dead set on using that gate, fit a lot of warp core stabilizers or prepare to fight them off if you can. Lowsec is only dangerous if you are not prepared for its surprises. Otherwise its just another leisurely stroll through the ghetto.
