Greetings fellow capsuleers! (I never know if it should be capital C or lower case c.. Food for thought i guess..)

I have been playing this game for a little over a month (ignore the characters age, RL issues made some.. Complications) and i have notice that most of the newer players don't like PvP or the idea of it, they have kind of a World of Warcraft/Diablo 3 approach to this, all bling and they can chose who can fight them, where EVE Online is a multitude more advanced and every choice has a consequence and you can basically do everything and anything you want, so i had an idea, and i don't know if this is the right forum board either so please moderators be kind, i couldn't really work out where it should be..

Anyways, i was thinking of making a PvP tournament for newer players and older players alike, but all 1v1 or 5v5 or something like that, all in Rookie Ships with another set of games in T1 Frigates, all Meta 4 and under modules, no Faction or T2 ammo, just the starting stuff, and you will be pared and squaring off with people in your SP range (under 100K, under 500k, under 1mil, under 5mil, ect. Might make it cover more, maybe 5 times gaps.. Will work on it and refine it).

The reason i want to do this is because i want to see more people embrace the entirety of this game and get out of the normal flow of progression. And to teach the newer players that PvP can be fun and all that, there will be prizes and the like, i have a large pool of ISK i am willing to pledge towards this, as it will be needed, id be providing the prizes and replacement ships and all the good stuff to encourage more PvP, hence why restrictions to T1 stuff, please, if you think this is a good idea, id be interested to know what you think, good or bad, how to get more support, any additional ideas, all that, i was thinking of doing it in a starter system or "safe" system if you know what i mean, i will find away to make it work without CONCORD getting involved (i.e. using jet cans to make every suspect, and duels for 1v1's. Was also thinking of promoting a scanning challenge, winner gets like a SoE Probe Launcher and full set of SoE Probes, stuff like that, please let me know what you think of all this, it would be greatly appreciated

Nothing's stopping you from organizing this indeed. Though i'd suggest that SP ranges wouldn't matter in the way you describe. It's entirely possible to get a higher SP character who has his SP in mining or industry or scanning or trade.

True.. Will have to consider someway to work that out.. Maybe how many kills you have on your billboard.. Ill work out a way, thanks for pointing that out, you think it is a good idea though?

Do you mean this like "Go for it! Have fun failing" or Go for it, good luck, good idea"? Sorry..

Won't know it till you try it, but I think it'll succeed. You're providing entertainment by organizing some sort of tournament (any tournament); I think people will sign up in droves just to have the fun.

That is good news, I'm glad to hear some support, i wasn't actually expecting any to be honest.. But i am currently typing up rules and stuff, working out how it would work, i think it would be a great way to get the community together and have some fun :)

When the rules are finished and the date is set, please feel free to make a grandiose opening post for your event in the In-Game Events and Gatherings part of the forum.

Because 'just to have fun' is exactly what it's all about! Success OP, your on the right track.

Oi! I have a bit of experience running multi-client streams for tournaments. If you'd like to stream this event, we can talk about technical details for doing something like this or this.

There are some other details like fleet structure and starting point characters. Bookmarks are also needed, and you want a corporation for this (and all organizing characters in this corporation) to share bookmarks. You drop them in a can for the contestants when they arrive at their designated starting characters. If you want to have it in the format we used, anyway.

Also, you'll notice in the screenshots there are slots for sponsors. That's convenient because you need to cover the UI buttons somehow. Hit up different rich folk like the EVE gambling sites, and our main sponsor https://www.eve-mogul.com/ (contact pilot: Jeronica).

I wouldn't of even thought about streaming it to be honest, the main focus of this was to get the people more immersed into New Eden, and to have a load of fun doing it, but id love to talk to you more about that!

Wow.. That is a bit more advanced then i was thinking.. I was going to drop MTU's apart from each other and you stay within 20km for Rookie Ships, and 50km for Frigates.. But i will try and do some research into that.. Sounds better then my idea..

That is really cool! I wasn't thinking of Sponsors to be honest, i was going to fund the whole thing myself.. But i might look into that when i get the base lay for it already and i know how it will be working, thanks for that!

They got people interested in sports when they started televising them.

Give it some thought: CCP may get some advertising out of it, sponsors will pay for ad spots, players who can't participate can watch, and the fights are recorded for posterity. Lots of parties getting stuff out of it, may make a lot of people happy.

Wow.. I really didnt think of it like that.. I will have to do some research then and see what i can do, hopeful i can get help and interest as time goes on, I'm hopping to get this running in the next month, 2 months at max i think, i already started to get the items and stuff i need to get it running and like i said I'm working on the rules and information.

All i want is to make people have a good time, and get some more interaction between players, newer ones especially so thanks for pointing this stuff out! :D

What? New players are like zombies needing to be guided? PVP-ers know they're PVP-ers. (Don't ask me how, they just do.) Others, know they're others. Any attempts to force someone to be what they aren't only serves to pi$$ them off. Too strident?

Okay, okay. Good idea. Good luck organizing it. You may want to break it down to regions, then have a final somewhere....anywhere but Jita. Big smile

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

Umm.. What? Im not forcing anyone, I'm offering a tournament that will cater to both skilled and newer pilots (Via the Rookie Ship Division and Frigate Division) and offering prices to winners and incentives to people to play (i.e. Replacement ships and modules or reimbursement for them).. Im not forcing anyone to do anything.. Just want to give the option, newer players might want to try something where they have a chance against a more skilled player, or even against others of there own level so long as it isn't going to cost them anything.. Its about having fun and getting people involved with the New Eden community.. Not forcing people to fight or lose..

And sounds good, i was thinking of having the openings for each racial type in a racial starting system, and then yeah, or hell, do the whole lot in a starter system that is easy to organise, probably Caldari Space as it is where i have access to the most stuff (Jita being close-ish).

Just so i have an idea, what would you guys think of a 1mil Entry fee? And what do you guys think of these as prizes?
Prizes:

Rookie Ship Division:

1st Prize Singles: Tactical Destroyer of your choice
2nd Prize Singles: 30mil ISK
3rd Prize Singles: 15mil ISK

1st Prize Double-team: T2 Frigate for each member
2nd Prize Double-team: 20mil ISK for each member
3rd Prize Double-team: 10mil ISK for each member

1st Prize Fleet: Navy Issue Frigate for each member
2nd Prize Fleet: 10mil ISK for each member
3rd Prize Fleet: 5mil ISK for each member

Frigate Ship Divison:

Same as above..

I disagree with entry fees. Remember that's a lot of ISK for newer players. It seems official, but it's a custom you should do without.

I think the key to good prizes is sponsorship, and the key to good participation is prizes...

Take a look through these threads to see what prizes looked like. Turnout was always good.

Wow.. That is really cool, and i was thinking of doing 25k Isk entry fee, but easy done, i wasn't sure if that was a thing or not, and man i wish i had the skill or knowledge to get something that well planned together, i didnt even know you could jetcan book marks and that.. I have a lot to read up on.. Thanks for the information, as for the prizes there will also be a T3 Cruiser up for a massive free for all at the end i was thinking of, is a T3 good enough? and little prizes for MVP and best sportsmen and all that.. Still new to this as I'm sure you know..

We decided to spread prize funds around to as many players as possible, rather than offering one huge prize to the first place finisher. Luckily our sponsorship was good enough that it meant decent prizes for nearly everyone, rather than a trinket each.

We made prize categories aside from place finishes, just to keep it interesting. Even with noob ships you can do prize categories like most damage received, most damage given, most expensive fit.

There was one contestant who satisfied the T1 frigate vs Navy frigate requirement for collecting nearly a billion ISK. I didn't think it would happen, so I made the prizes nearly as much as the first place prize. I was more than a little bit excited on comms, which myself and Derp used to commentate. Somewhat successfully.

Commentary is another big one. Put out a call for one or two commentators. If it was up to me, I'd pick a hardcore PVPer, and a second commentator for comedic relief... in addition to yourself. And let the stream viewers hear your communication with the commentators in organizing the tournament. It's a fun look behind the scenes.

You can't use the stream to direct contestants, unfortunately. Even on immediate / zero delay, a stream lags behind real-time, and you need to use fleet chat (or some other consolidated channel) for coordination. I suppose you could have a separate teamspeak channel to direct contestants.

@Rain6637

Just read your linked threads about the Destruction Derpy. Since the last one, it's been quite a while, so i'm curious what happened?

@OP

- Entry should be free, in my opinion.
- Like already mentioned, you need bigger prize pools. If you can't provide them on your own, you should try to find sponsors. A 50mil first prize is kind of meh.... From the top off my head, first one i'd ask is Ironbank. And getting enough donations, as soon as your tournament becomes more publicly known, shouldn't be that big of a problem.
- If you want to stream this, a good commentator would be really beneficial. Maybe a streamer would like to help you out with that (Fin, zaqq, etc..). Additionally this would be some good publicity for your cause.

Anyway, i wish you good luck with that.

And if you manage to get this tournament up, count me in Blink

Regards,
Damjan
