Out of curiosity what was the reasoning behind that change?

You know, I tried to find this in the patch notes or devblogs, but all attempts yielded nothing. Hopefully this is what is meant in the meeting notes about "improving findability fo things like devblogs"?

Also, as per the OP, and the post above this, why did it change? As it has changed numerous times in the past, it would be interesting to know the reasons it was changed each time. Like someone can't make their minds up.

You realize that large wrecks with oversized cargo used to actually be persistent right?

Worked like this until 2012 or so:

-Large wrecks filled with bulky cargo could only be salvaged once.
-After salvage was complete the wreck would -remain in place- to hold the cargo, and could not be further salvaged. (attempts to do so would bring an error message)
-The unsalvageable yellow wreck would remain on grid for the next hour or two.
-Passersby would invariably try to loot it and promptly get killed by cloaked stealth bombers. (Who owned the Itty V wreck, having filled it with oversized wrapped, worthless, cargo - in order to attract loot thieves and pop them.)

Would returning to this old system be agreeable to you?

It would seem to satisfy your strict requirements that you be able to retrieve the salvage 'at any time'.
Salvage is freely available, loot is protected from instant destruction.

Everyone wins, right?

Right.
