Advice on running low-sec combat sites?

EDIT: I made this thread assuming MJD would help me get out of scrams, then I heard scrams scram MJD as well. So that made this point almost invalid. Then my main question is, what to fly for low-sec combat sites if I can't fly Ishtar yet? Or better just wait for that..?

Hello,

I like playing solo, I'm still fairly low in SP (11M now). Lately I have been thinking about expanding my into low-sec exploration, then I thought, what do I need to run combat sites there?

I'm mostly skilled in drones and Gallente ships, and a bit in Minmatar as well.

A simple switch would be, to just slightly change my PvE lvl4 domi fit a bit. Mostly because I'm pretty good skilled for this and it's so easy to run sites with that.
My thought was, MJD plus high range plus reasonable tank should be able to get away from gankers and warp out if needed?

Mainly, MJD helps with escaping warp scrams etc? Or am I missing something and is this too optimistic? I have seen a lot of posts saying that running a BS is a gank-magnet.

I know that Ishtar might be a good choice, I dont have the skills for that yet though (although Im training towards it). And something like a Vexor Navy Issue (or even regular vexor) won't be able to do many sites comfortable I think. (for sure not the bigger ones obviously).

Especially Im wondering about the questions in bold, what do you guys think? And any other advice in general?
Would be much appreciated! :)

MJDs get shut off by player scrams m8. your domi will die in a fire before it even pays for itself. The reason people fly ishtars is that they are much harder to catch.

Ah didn't know that. That makes my whole point basically pointless then, since it was counting on MJD to get out of scrams :D

Any other advice then for somebody who can't fly Ishtar yet?

I've never done low sec angel plexes but i could well imagine the navy vexor being able to run them. Also know that surviving in lowsec is not only about which ship you fly. Get a scout on a second account, get to know the locals, maybe join them. You know, the usual.

I used to run a tech 3 cruiser (tengu/legion) followed by a tier 3 battlecruiser for more dps (oracle/tornado) before they changed aggro mechanics way back when. My technique was always get in and out as quickly as possible, the less time you are out in space fighting rats the less time you are vulnerable to ganks. Other people like to run cloaky setups or (almost) non-scannable setups.

After the aggro changes I ran a tengu/legion solo in the sites and had a recon ship cloaked outside the complex, sometimes I brought out a pirate faction BS (machariel/vindicator) with a recon cloaked outside for a 6/10 if the surrounding area was quiet. A pilgrim or arazu will run off just about anybody trying to gank you but you have to decent at dual boxing.

After the aggro changes in conjunction with the Odyssey scanning changes I've since quit the lowsec exploration life and refuse to do it anymore out of spite for so many changes to the system I used to love.

Anyhow to answer your question, I would imagine a tengu or ishtar is the ship of choice these days if you are doing it solo.

Warp Scrambler stops MJD, Warp Disruptor does not.

Fly a Vexor or Navy Vexor until you get the Ishtar.

whenever I went to low sec, it was camped everywhere. Up north, down south. I was in interceptor, not a good target for pirates, but you Domi wouldn't last there long.

Move in and set up shop if you are serious about making a living in EVE through lowsec exploration. Know the rules of engagement and how to blue ball pirates and you'll be fine.

If you want exploration without aggravation join the lowsec nation!

Speaking from experience, Vexor Navy Issue works wonders. I've done up to the Angel 5/10 with it and my skills aren't super. You just have to be smart about ranges and repositioning. Use correct sentries and resists against expected rat types.

I'm confused about which specific aggro changes made you quit lowsec. Is it the tendency for NPC to attack drones? Also the scanning changes made life a lot easier for finding sites, how would that be bad? Maybe it made it easier for gankers to scan sites too but that gankers could always scan down a site too? I'm interested, please flesh out what you mean. Thanks.

Use a gila.. can use highs for utility or rapid lights to help with frigs tacklers.. with 4 DDA's in the low the 2 hammerheads will do round 650 dps.. skills depending of course.

... What next ??

You might consider a Stratios. DPS is gimped because only 4 sentry drones, but it's easy to skill into and it has a cov-op.

This however DPS is fine (600+) for a ship that can use a cov-ops cloak. I wlouldnt suggest null sec without at least a scout. T3 is best suited for that job with interdiction nullifier subsystem fitted.

I don't remember which patch it was but before that patch rats did not switch aggro off of the first ship into the site. So I'd warp in my tanked tengu and get aggro then follow it in with a tier 3 battlecruiser for dps.

The scanning changes took away deep space probes so the skill point barrier for serious exploration went away. The older players who had deep space probes pretty much had a monopoly on lowsec exploration as you couldn't keep up with the speed in which they found the good sites. You also get a list of what's in the system now just for jumping in.

So ya... these things were better for the game but worse for my wallet. Rather than quit (like literally all of my lowsec exploration friends did) I just went to nullsec and embraced all the joy that is afk ishtars.
