Can anyone point me in the right direction for some examples to get me started with the api and Visual Studio?

I have no desire to build web based software, I need to get a thick client up and running.

If you plan on working in .NET check here: https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/XML_API_Libraries

There are two .NET libraries listed for working with the EVE API. I would start with those. :)
