I had massive issue's with freezing . But I have found that while I'm running Vuze and playing eve, eve freezes. It runs fine while Vuze isn't running. But the second I open it, BAM, eve freeze's in under 2mins.

Still freezing along strong here. It sometimes freezes before I can even log in, but usually while i'm in the game for a few minutes. Rather annoying.

My latest petitions did have some positive effect (for me, personally) though, so I encourage you to create petitions as well.

Hello, and welcome to day 50 of the mac service outage.

To recap: There has been confirmation of work being done on the problem by that Konflikt guy, but so far nothing has been mentioned about recouping the time lost during the outage.
Personally, I would be satisfied with having the lost time appended to the end of my subscription.

Perhaps I should open a petition?

You're not gonna get free time for this. Asking it makes you sound like an ass.

That CCP Konflikt has made some updates is great news though. Wish he'd make them in this thread.

Still crashing every 10 minutes or so...
I assume holidays should be over by now. Can we get an update on the situation? Were mac devs layed off and mac client will be discontinued in the next few months?
Should we get PCs if we want to continue playing EVE?

Well, I gave up on the Mac Client and got me a VM with winblows. There are a few good things of doing so:
- EvE Client working perfectly WITH anti-aliasing, with a performance as good as the native client
- EvEMon
- EvEHQ

It is not as if Windows is better than Mac OS, the problem is, CCP is coding for windows and "emulating it" on the Mac for the client. That is never gonna be as fast or as good. Sad

Do you use bootcamp or some sort of inline emulator?

Sad thing is i'm one of a small minority that has raid card setup, and bootcamp is not supported on my machine.
I'm pretty sure after two months majority of mac users moved on to bootcamp, and those like me will be left behind when mac client will be finally discontinued :(

I mean.. we got used to playing with minimal settings without sound on high-end machines. We adjusted to more lag during fights, overheating and setting up preferences every other week, not using probes and learning to work around the behavior that crashes the client. But this, where you get freezes randomly no matter what you were doing, in most random places as often as few minutes really pushes it over the edge..

If you have trouble identifying or replicating issues, i'm (as im sure many here) are ready to give you our time and cooperation, to help fix it. Just please, please do something about it.

Parallels, as simple as that.

There are a few settings that I changed from the "suggested" so Windows doesn't even THINK about touching my Mac files, because it can't see anything. Also, you should change a few settings in Windows so you won't have "hibernate" files, huge page files and the system restore.

In the end the VM software just builds a container folder with a few files and the file that is used as a hard drive for the VM. 37 Gb is what mine takes. A few extra GBs than just the EvE client, but I couldn't care less. Works perfectly, full screen, magic mouse gestures to get me back to Lion, and I have tools I wouldn't in the Mac otherwise.

If you're really considering it, let me know and I'll post the details. Smile

Right, here we go.

First of all, both softwares (Parallels and Windows) can be used for 30 days before you decide to put any money into it.

Then, Parallels improved tremendously in the past two versions, 6 and 7. No more extra annoying network devices or crazy processes. This in the past was something that literally made me uninstall the software, and those issues are gone.

My iMac is a late 2009 model, Quad Core i7 2.8GHz, 8GB Ram.

I'm dedicating 4GBs and allowing the VM to use all the 8 cores. You might wanna change this better for your needs.

When you create a VM, you can "Configure" your VM. Here are my settings (I'm only listing what makes any difference to what I mentioned before):
- General: 8 Cores and 4GB
- Options, Startup and Shutdown: Startup View FULL SCREEN
- Options, Optimization: Faster virtual machine; Enable Adaptive Hypervisor ON; Tune Windows for speed ON, Better performance
- Options, Security: Isolate Mac from windows OFF (we do want to be able to access windows' files from the Mac)
- Options, Backup: Do not back up virtual machine ON; SmartGuard DISABLED
- Options, Sharing: Share Mac, Share Folders NONE; Share Mac, Shared Profile, Share Mac user folders with Windows OFF; Share Mac, SmartMount, Map Mac volumes to Windows OFF (these options are basically what isolate your Mac from Windows. You could also add some Custom Folders with read only option)
- Options, Sharing: Share Windows, Access Windows folders from Mac ON; Mount virtual disks to Mac desktop ON
- Options, Applications: Share Windows applications with Mac OFF (this if turned on will make your mac a mess); Share Mac applications with Windows OFF
- Options, Full Screen: Use Mac OS X Full Screen ON; Active Screen Corners OFF; Adjust Mac resolution in full screen OFF
- Options, Advanced: SmartMouse AUTO; Optimize modifier keys for games ON
- Hardware, Boot Order: Boot flags kernel.waet.enable=0 (this is something that you might not need to do. I needed in order to prevent a freaking bug popping up at windows boot. At the time I had my VM set up, it was not the latest version of Parallels. Maybe now it is not required anymore)
- Hardware, Video: Video memory 512Mb (which is what my GPU has); Enable 3D acceleration ON
- Hardware, Network 1: Type... you might want to check what would work best for you. I have this set up as Default Adapter, but also had it working before with Shared Network. There are differences in how other OS see your guest OS. I use this VM for other things too, thus why I changed this from Shared.

Now... the Windows part:
- "Start Menu", in "Search Programs and Files" type "command". Then right-click "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as administrator". In the prompt window, type: "powercfg -h off" without quotes. This will turn off hibernate.
- Open a Windows Explorer window, right-click Computer on the left list, click Properties. On the left, click on Advanced system settings. Click the "Advanced" tab, then in "Performance" click "Settings...". Then click the "Advanced" tab, and in "Virtual Memory" click "Change...". Uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives", then click "Custom size" and put 512 in Initial size and lets say 1024 or 2048 in Maximum size. I have it at 1024. This basically lowers the page file size from tons of GBs to 512 Mb. Windows do get some errors sometimes with networks that some people related to this, some lsass.exe errors, but I couldn't care less. Internet and EvE works, it is less space lost to windows crap. Not to mention that all files I need to put in windows I just transfer them through the Mac by clicking the windows hard drive on my mac desktop.
- Still in "System Properties" window (Computer --> Properties --> Advanced system settings as done in the previous item), click the "System Protection" tab, then click "Configure..." and on the new window choose "Turn off system protection". This is the restore thing that will make every installation slow and consume unnecessary space.

There you go. Now just install all updates to windows, an anti-virus solution (I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials as an anti-virus for your windows. It is free and a quite good av solution: http://windows.microsoft.com/mse ), make sure it has Parallel Tools installed otherwise you'll have no performance at all and enjoy your "EvE Mac VM Client" without any crashes. =)

I've just set it up. Works okay, sometimes a bit jittery, averages 60fps - but what's the most important, it doesn't crash.
Thank you for the whole write up, must've taken a while to type that, and it was very useful.
I assume there are more people like me who think that the only way to go for windows client is boot camp, but apparently you can get similar performance to native mac client using pure virtualisation.
Again - thank you!

Just ran a dozen missions with no crashes to report...did something quietly get fixed at some point?

I can assure you not. I had three in one single short FW mission yesterday. But it is totally random, sometimes I can play for hours without problem.

edit: lol, while writing this post my client crashed while running in the background. It seems to worsen the problem having the client running in the background. Happens to me very often.

Thanks for that Parallels guide. Absolutely amazing that we can emulate windows and run the client perfectly, but we can't emulate the client. -.-

Maybe you guys should drop Transgaming and get Parallels to work on the emulation, they clearly know what they are doing.

Ha! seconded. And windows is WAY buggier and more complex than Eve.

I'm glad you liked it. =)

As Blaze InfernoArc pointed out, there were times in which I had no problem at all. I'm a mission runner myself, and I was used to run for hours without trouble. However, one day I had more than ten freezes in less than half an hour, one even at the character selection screen. That was when I gave up and tried the VM.

Day two of regular/heavy play and only two crashes, which is more or less normal. Seriously, what changed?

It certainly wasn't my system.

Interesting... yesterday right after the patch and update #1 I tried to use the Mac client and... well, it froze before I could even undock.

Didn't try anything after that, but I'll give it a go again today. Lets see if it was just bad luck or if something has improved already.
