I also remember watching a clip about a though experiment on what would happen if Earth was ejected from orbit. And the conclusion was the same: Life would go on. Just on another energy source.

Well, Neil DeGrasse is a nice guy, but he's making one heap of assumption: that life can start in a geothermal environment.

Weird as they are, those creatures are exaclty like every other lifeform on earth. They just adapted to those hot springs and followed them into the depths of the ocean as they sunk. They're colonists, settlers, whose ancestors were born in the "Goldilocks" zone.

And yes, maybe they would keep going on with their business if Earth was ejected from solar system, oceans froze and everything else perished. But they didn't start the game of life.
