(If this is meant for OOPE, please move)

Just for fun, what have been your MMO games before EVE? This doesn't count multiplayer matches such as C&C Red Alert etc, I mean a "constant online world" kind of thing.

I'll fire the first volley. FFXI, WOW, GW, RIFT,SWTOR. Finally, EVE

Between that list, it is FFXI and EVE that I have really enjoyed. The rest have been ok. Although I must admit, I enjoyed SWTOR's Huttball matches Lol

I've tried a few others, like f2p etc, but I personally discount anything that didn't last a month

Why, thank you, Thing!

Runescape, Guild Wars 1, Eve. At the same time as Eve, Guild Wars 2.

Runescape taught me grinding is boring as hell. GW1 taught me that sometimes the fun comes from playing with other people. Eve was/is more fun than both of those combined, but has truly awful PvE. GW2 is for when I want to participate in some PvE that doesn't suck.

SWG (pre-NGE), EVE.

EVE has ruined me when it comes to MMOs.

Asheron's Call was the only other MMO I've subscribed to for any significant length of time (1999-2002 or so I think, with an occasional revisit of the lower levels with a new character).

I have briefly played:
Asheron's Call 2
Dark Age of Camelot
Anarchy Online
Earth & Beyond
Guild Wars
LotR Online
D&D Online
Age of Conan
Elder Scrolls Online

Maybe some others I've forgotten. I mostly only played the beta or free trial of these games. AC and EVE are the only ones I took a liking to. AC I fell in love with right away, EVE took 6 years to win me over and get me to start playing regularly.

I wish I tried UO and SWG back in the day.

Going through University, WoW was the only thing people played in Residence and in class. Sadly, I spent a lot more time there than I probably should have in hindsight.

But really, EVE ever since. Blink

In a previous incarnation, I was an ace WW2 Eastern Front pilot protecting Россия-Матушка from the Luftwaffe dogs.

While not strictly MMOs, combat flight simulators are one of the most immersive and heart pounding adrenaline rushes you can get in online play. Like nothing you'll get in a click the ship and watch what happens game like this one.

I'd still be playing but I needed a dedicated rig for it. What with having to hook up a head tracker, joystick, throttle, rudder pedals, USB headset and 5.1 surround sound, it just became too much effort after a while. To start EVE I need to log in. To start up IL-2 Sturmovik took about 20 minutes. Then find who's on TeamSpeak. Then find another squad to battle. Then set up a server, sort out the rules for that battle, wait for the guy who's decided to go make a peanut butter sandwich, and finally line up on the airfield.

I still miss it though.

Lets' see I started with MUD's somewhere in the 90's before that I played red dragon (LORD) in a BBS's system after that I've played AO, Shadow Bane, WOW, EVE, lotro, AOC, warhammer and EVE again in that order.

First mmo's for me were wow and vindictus, didn't like them that much so i thought mmo's were not for me.

Then a i saw some trailers from eve and thought why not try the 14 day trial, it's not like i would actually keep playing it with the monthly pay and all. That was back in 2011 Lol

I played some guild wars 2. It's a good game and i enjoyed it, but it got quite repetitive after a while

Eve was the first MMO I ever played. Since then I've dabbled in WoW, GW2, and SWTOR, but none of them held my attention for very long. Eve will always be my first MMO love.

Hundred Years War, an ancient conceptual MMO on AOL in 1995. The concept is still brilliant, I think. You play a real baron, earl, duke, etc. from the history of that time, on up to King of England, Roi de France or Pope. You have so many things you want to do, but never enough time or ducats to do them all. You need your side to win, but your ability to influence outcomes (and your level of responsibility) depends on your income level (land holdings/medieval wealth production) as mere baron on up to a super-feudal lord medieval king.

The whole system just organically creates a real feudal system, where everybody is naturally relying on each tp fulfill the feudal service-in-exchange-for-protection oath. And the game usually goes on close to a year, side vs. side, across many tactical battles, expensive but crucial strategic sieges. And many diplomatic initiatives with players throughout the game. Recruit a traitor, trust a nominal traitor not to be an awoxer? Which side are the Doge of Venice and the Holy Roman Emperor and their ducats going to side with? And why? Will they switch again later? Can we seed mistrust within the other team? Is our King or Roi player up to all this complicated b.s.? (Best one I ever saw was a hardass retired former prison warden).

Still have fine friends from old Hundred Years Wars. We're feudal bonded brethren. I think we forgot about the game or how we know each other. Just when somebody's doing a project, or his wife is having a surgery, or whatever, the guys say hey and call in the troops. :)

MUD's... Copper, Eltanin, ROM's, Godwars, lp 2.4.5, later lp muds, YaMUD, a bit of the aberMUDS.
After that, EverQuest, Earth & Beyond (til it went belly up), EVE, dabbled with WoW and disliked it... back to EVE.
Now I'm pretty much ruined for any 'civilized' MMO that might crop up, as I hungrily eye other people's things and constantly seek ways to either make them my own, or destroy them.

Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.
