In a former life I spent a great deal of time teaching other players how to PvP in eve. I am potentially embarking on another project and so I would like to survey the new players. I am curious what the state of the new player base is about PvP.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
4) If you are not interested why not?
5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
6) How many skill points do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?

Thanks for taking the moments to read. Please no flaming. I will read every answer. Debate = good. Flaming = bad. You know the difference.

Helping newbies by showing them there's other ways to play EVE than zombie PVE grind or F1 blobbing is glorious. That they CAN contribute and CAN be effective and victorious in PVP without a 17 year long skill plan and 5 bil costing (battle)ship, the "aha" moment to speak, is worth all the effort and time invested.

Hi,

I've been playing on and off for about a month so far, but I don't get much game time each week.

I'm interested in both areas of the game, PvE and collaborative PvP. I think I will join a crop when I've finished the last tutorial and possibly Sisters of EVE arc. I was thinking EVE Uni.

I've been reading the forum and seeing the in game chat and have been expecting PvP, Null Sec, Low Sec and Wormholes to all fit into the category of instant death because I'm too new.

I'd like to fly co-op and to explore more dangerous areas, but I don't really know how to know when I'm ready/good enough.

Also, with limited time to play, I don't want to commit to a crop until I know they won't mind me dipping in and out.

Just answered your 10 Qs but they disappeared ...Here we go again...

1) Are you Interested in PvP?

Yes

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?

As above, I expect instant and repeated death

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?

I like the idea of co-op on projects and safety in numbers

4) If you are not interested why not?

---

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?

I've learned form chat and articles not to trust almost everyone because of scamming

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?

Dunno. I have 1.5mil but assume that's not enough. Probably need them to be focused too, as I just learned to focus rather than be general, and have redirected into those required for Frigate mastery

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?

Frigates prob OK if fully fitted and skilled

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?

Dunno, but I am assuming that newbie killing will be what I suffer from a lot

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?

Don't know enough about it yet to answer this

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?

Co-op work on some big project, like planetary supply chain and sourcing rare bits to build something big like a starbase, etc.

Some of those questions are the wrong questions, IMO, for true newbies.

Specifically, "PVP" in this game is a very broad term that encompasses a number of activities that newbies may not be familiar with. Small gang fights are different from piracy, alliance fleet ops, wormhole roaming, etc. If I can make a suggestion, describe the various kinds of PVP that are available in the game, then ask in your survey which ones the newbies would prefer, and why.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?

Actually, yes. Even though I am more of the PvE kind of guy in most MMORPG's I play(ed) - PvP skills are a necessity to get around and spice things up.

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?

ISK.

Plus, I have no idea where to start. There's so much information and all of them are contradictory. All I conclude from that is that everything is possible.
Except, the fits I assemble. Those aren't. Those are bad. Those are very bad.

I signed up for FW - but I have no idea where to start.
It doesn't help that I'm a Minmatar fan and - as irony wants it - I like to fly Minmatar only, but Minmatar FW is pretty much dead. There are hardly any fleets and the chat is a bit of a mish-mash.
Eventually I signed back out of FW without having done even a single roam - also because I'm in Rens trying to get to Lv4 Missions and everything is expensive there. I wanted to buy skillbooks not even 3 jumps away (which were -600% compared to rens) BUT Amarr had taken it over with FW so I couldn't enter any stations.

Did I mention I lack the ISK?

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?

I presume it's fun. Better than station spinning anyway. Somehow I get the joy of mining (hah) and the usual pvE and exploration stuff. I intend to go into low some day or perhaps even WH's .. but I imagine pvP is an essential part of the game.

4) If you are not interested why not?
-

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?

-

6) How many skill points do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?

I reckon it takes more ISK than it takes skill points.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?

Well, I wouldn't take a rookie ship out for it, but a simple frigate could do. (Still costs 5m for a fitted rifter, though).

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?

Not sure if I understand this question correctly. Being able to read what's on your screen / overview is probably one of them. Though I generally can't be too bothered with stuff like trajector-alytis stuff. How about floating still and have your opponent do all the work?

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?

The loots.
Definitely the loots. It's ISK.
It's everything.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?

Killing people from my mining barge.
I'd love to fly a Hel or hel (pun not intended) even a Naglfar. Why not, right? Anyhow, I'd be glad if I could go into null or lowsec for industry without being frantic all the time.

Might mention that I've this account since 2012, but have hardly played the game. Subscribed a couple of times, but never got anywhere. Got into Providence one time due to my cousin, but no good memories from that. Wardec = stationspinning. No thanks.

These trailer video's always get me. Epic, well organized fleets that warp in, awesome explosions and stuff going on. But the blobbiness and the whole icon stuff going on on my screen is usually quite the turnoff.

Latest trailer had me once more. Hopefully I get somewhere this time.

As long as it's Minmatar.

My main and alt are at around 3m and 2m sp respectively. Main is focusing on drones, frigates, and destroyers at the moment, and alt is in a heron doing heron stuff.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?

Absolutely

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?

Skill and scheduling. I'm getting to where skill is not such an issue, but scheduling is. In any other game, I usually play single player so the action is immediate, or World of Tanks, where it's just a couple of minutes till battle. Here it seems that once a few people decide to go roam, for instance, there is a lot of waiting for people to get their ships fitted, to fly from several systems over, etc. It can be an hour before you get to where the FC is putting people in actually battle positions, etc. Please tell me this is not always like this.

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?

The glory of battle, lol. Fun, money.

4) If you are not interested why not?

As mentioned, scheduling seems difficult.

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?

N/A

6) How many skill points do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?

I think 3m, about where I'm at.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?

To really be effective, it seems a tech ll, but a tech l seems it could assist in a fight with good direction.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?

Probably player experience.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?

Time warp me to 10m skill points. Not understanding your question without an example.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?

To have an admirable win/loss ratio.

Thanks for asking, btw. : )

2 years old is newbeeish right?

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Are you interested in blowing up spaceships in a game about blowing up spaceships?

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone's hard earned assets blow up or get stolen.
Also, control of space territory and resources. I like to make it harder for my enemies to make isk that might go into blowing me up more effectively.

6) How many skill points do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
In a fleet, any noob in a tackle frigate is useful. As long as you can fit a MWD, and a point.
Elite solo pvp is a different story, individual superiority requires... superior fittings and tactics.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
Velator. Rifter, Condor...

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
Control of limited resources like moons, sovereignty objectives, pocos; control of access to space through gate and hole control.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
Fighting in stations... Being able to kill supers that aren't logged in.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
Becoming a capital fc!

Hi Kraythen,

I still consider my self new despite playing for several months - answers below.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Absolutely - I've recently joined RvB specifically to experience that.

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
Previously, my key reasons were:
1 - lack of ISK to fund my mistakes. My fits also seem to be bad, despite all the research I've done and the chats I've had post-death :-)
2 - a perception that I'd experience instant repeated death and not understand why.

3) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
This game, for me at least, is all about interaction with others, not mission grinding.

4) If you are not interested why not?
N/A

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
N/A

6) How many skill points do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
TLDR - there's no minimum, just don't expect instant success.

I think it's too simplistic to suggest that there's no minimum threshold for effectiveness. Whilst it's true that low SP is not a barrier, it drastically limits the engagements I can take on and be successful in. I define success here as 'learn' as well as (occasionally) 'win'.

So far, I have a shade over 13M SP, with the lion's share distributed across Drones, Engineering, Gunnery, Navigation and Spaceship Command which has been shaped by my use of Gallente drone boats. I'm now branching out so I can fly other racial frigs and weapons systems.

So, more is better insofar as it contributes to an increased success rate. It's no substitute for real experience, though. The real trick for me is to maximise what I learn from that engagement, and that's not always easy. Making split second decisions on whether or not to engage depends on my ability to:
1 - know my enemy (for me that means understanding what that ship is, what weapons systems it has and how it's likely to be flown)
2 - form and execute a strategy to counter what I see, including micromanaging all those ship systems.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
As in 6 above, sure I have killed stuff with a T1-fit frig, I just don't expect to do it often. Frig engagements are so darn quick too, which compounds the difficulty of understanding what just happened and how to learn from it.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
Communication with other players. IMHO, they're the best source of understanding how to play the game and have fun.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
Instant slo-mo replay of my many and varied deaths :-)

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
My current thinking is that I want to do small fleet stuff and trap the enemy in my dictor bubbles whilst my fleet mates send them back to their medical clones :-)

Cheers!

OK. I've been playing again for roughly 10 months and still consider that plenty new. It takes several years to master this game.

1-Yes!
2-I am interested and have not so far as I haven't the DPS and Hulls unlocked to excel at PvP.
3-Competition and becoming a superior pilot.
4-I already said I was interested. Quit putting words in my mouth!
5-I would never pay for protection.
6- I would say effective PvP requires between 22-35 Million Skill Points.
7-T2 Frigate solo. But really it depends upon your opponent.
8-Being able to target quickly and inflict heavy damage prior to being locked yourself.
9-The ability to effectively master whatever hull I am flying and not always rely upon a single EWAR tactic.
10-The ability to blow up anyone foolish enough to attack me.

I left out the questions that didn't apply or I have no answer to

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Possibly...?

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
Uselessness and discouragement, 'don't fly what you can't afford to lose' principal and too much time and skills invested in mining ... gah! Getting stuck mining tends to breed an inferiority complex imo. I'm also a very left brain person, I don't have a natural affinity for numbers, so for one example of that: angular velocity - whilst I understand that in theory, in practice I don't 'read' the output as meaningful data, I have to stop and think about it for a while, which is pretty useless! Also I'm bad at scanning which seems to be a requirement to go into low/null in the first place. I spent 3 hours the other day trying to scan down an MTU I'd lost, never got it above 73% and by the time I'd trained a couple of extra levels of scanning skills it was gone! Sad

3) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
It looks like fun

6) How many skill points do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
More than I have... (10 mil) unless I suppose if you have corp mates you can fly with, then I think it probably doesn't matter whether you've got lots or practically nothing. I imagine that being able to decipher whatever your FC says is probably more important (I don't think I'll ever remember the difference between point and scram fast enough!)

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
I want to say a frigate, but high sec gankers seem to be occasionally effective in rookie ships - then again that's usually against mining barges so... I guess I'll stick with my original answer Big smile Or perhaps a better answer is a properly fitted ship!

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
Not panicking Oops

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
Mining Big smile because mining is really dull and it would be great if it wasn't!
