First: CCP stated Here : "PBR shows the state of our assets far more accurately than the simple model we have been using up to now. We used to rely on the physically inaccurate numbers to avoid certain display problems, but now we have to tackle those issues directly. Accordingly, many assets will only be perfected through additional attention."

They've changed the lighting system completely for the ships. Up to this point they've been faking the appearance of certain aspects. Now they have a more realistic lighting setup, which in turn shows the faking that's been going on. So they have to re-adjust things.
Releasing PBR now is part of their new method of releasing things that are done as they move along, instead of doing twice a year updates.

Eve is a work in progress. The problem is that we, as customers, don't get to see the whole picture like the devs do. So we see these changes without the benefit of knowing what other changes are coming down the pipe. The result is that things seem off, and a flood of players runs to the forums to complain about how their world is going to end because of x change.

A lot of the ships look better. The Ark looks phenomenal in the new system, and the Myrmidon finally looks like it's made of metal, not plastic.

What CCP has to do now is adjust the textures for various aspects of the ships surfaces (normal, specular, and color). The metalic look on some ships does need to be broken up a bit, but that is part of the retexturing process.

TL;DR: PBR is the lighting. Textures now need to be adjusted to compensate for the new lighting

Wow, you're worse.

As a graphic artist, I see (almost) nothing wrong with the choice of texture palettes tones, lighting etc.
Everything looks much more real and with a bit of "pssshhhhh" added in for good measure.

I simply find it boring that every time players ask for visual updates and get them, immediately after start complaining about them.
"We want more real" [real inserted] "Ah it looks too real now"
The devs must be pulling their hairs out right now.
Rhea made everything look even more awesome.
