well why do people follow rockstars or sports team members?

because theya re involved with something they care about. the personalities and goals of the devs are what shape and direct the form and future of the game, when one leaves, their influence goes too, and is replaced by whoever takes up the reins.

its like yanks and their eggball teams, they get fanatical over who is and isnt on what team and how they perform, because that player can influence whether the team will flounder or prosper in the tournament

I wonder when Riot will announce their new hire...

Regardless, sorry to see him go, he was always a catalyst for interesting developments.

I went to school with Greyscale, I was finally going to get to go to Fanfest this year and was going to try and wedgie him or something.

He was in the year above me and me was a butthole.

Now I'll never get that chance Sad

What ever my opinion of the changes you have made to my beloved mistress Eve Online. I know you did them believing you would make the game better for everybody. I also know that while to many of us you are solely a game Developer, you have like all of us, many facets to your life. I wish you all the best at your new employer, living in your new city, exciting times for you.

You mean changes that a lot of people like?

The only ones who like them are those who think they make a difference, and those who take advantage of them for entertainment. Kill rights and bounty-hunting could have been so much more, but weren't. And you know what? That seems to define a lot of EVE changes recently. The people who seem to do the best jobs at CCP today are those who are working on things like ship rebalancing, usability, and artistic/visual improvements. Everything else is full of oversimplification and catering to the lowest common denominator.

I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

welp with his departure there goes any hope to rebalance and fix the rorqual since he said it himself that it will take a full on "team" to fix it.. just due to the changes he already put in place completely forgetting about the Capital Industrial Ship.

I guess fozzie will give her some new rigs or an extra slot somewhere..

Rorqual Rest in Peace...
she was gutted in crius
she was put to sleep in phoebe
now her change maker is gone with no one left to even fix it he even had to pull "data" to find out she was used for mining support.
so with him gone is the idea of "you will want this thing in the field" gone with him??

so many questions left and no one will answer it..

a good day and a sad day at the same time.

guess she'll get a timer for an answer.

Don't fall apart just yet. Remember, in a recent devblog they said that letting caps into high-sec wasn't off the table for discussion. There's still hope for the Rorqual yet.

Riot Games has gained an awesome dev.

Wait, that's where all CCP employees go when they leave right?

He made some good changes, while I agree they are not rockstars, Devs with a good vision is a good thing.

people do seem to assign credit for specific changes to whatever dev is being the public face of the team responsible

i have no idea which people were responsible for certificates, or whose project it was, but i remember greyscale is given credit and he happened to write the devblog

i like certificates, i used the system a lot when starting out. helped me with early skill planning and with identifying important skills

That's how project heads work.

Project heads are in most cases assigned to projects, they don't choose them. They may make choices on implementation but for the most part they are just there to ensure the execution of an idea.

What is the applicable EvE saying? Oh yeah, adapt or die. Funny how people like to be selective with that opinion.

Adapt or die to...Simplification? I'm not sure how that makes sense.

He was very polarizing and won't be missed.

On one hand some good came from his efforts like the new crimewatch system and the Phoebe jump changes (I live in null, own both a carrier and dread and still think the changes were a good idea in general).

But, remember he also is the person responsible for the dominion sov system, tied with Incarna as probably the worst design decision in the history of EVE.

Was he upset that teams are being cancelled?

Jokes aside, I was impressed with the way Greyscale fearlessly implemented changes to industry while patiently listening to player input and explaining CCP opinion and direction in the forums. It's not easy to keep a level head when players are rioting. He certainly withstood the heat in the kitchen with the jump changes.

Best of luck with the next stage of your career!

Some of us have met the devs, played with them, been friends with them. Eve has a somewhat small community, that is for the most part full of amazing people. It is only natural that we care about our own. Sure some of it may be a bit over the top, but I'll take that over not caring any day.
