PBR does do a good job of showing off how much some of the ships need an improvement in their textures.
PBR is looking good as a system, but only gets a 7/10 from me because of how bad some of the textures are. Some of the ships look off color (even if it is more accurate to what was painted, some ships, especially pirate ships, have become much less accurate to what we are used to from all these years and come to expect), or plasticky.

Speaking of related things, what do you guys use besides just textures? I thought you guys used bump and normal maps, but after examining a few ships (eg. kestrel), some of the details appear to be just painted on and not corrected for with a normal map so are still obviously flat from an angle (eg. the hardpoint greebles on the kestrel)

Also, how IS that ship repainting coming along?

Wonderful!! It's lovely to see the math and explanations behind this :)

That dev blog was oddly arousing. Those math and technicals....

I appreciate that the team has been listening and changing some things as people have mentioned them during the test process.

That said I noticed in the dev blog you said you may redesign some ships in the future due to this update. Please please stop doing this, unless you mean like a reskin instead of redesign.. you acknowledged that people get attached to their ships in the other thread. I cringe every time I see a ship being remade to be completely different design and style from its previous self.. please don't do any more of these drastic redesigns. Just because a ship is unique and different doesn't mean it needs to be changed entirely. Thank you for hearing my thoughts.

Don't forget this is a space submarine simulator. Ships don't get dirty in outer space-water.

E: Also, please turn the nebulae down from 11 to 5 or 6 please. Too much background lighting is just interference.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

I must say that i was shocked to see by comparison how well the ships looked when eve first came out. I guess i remember those days with some degree of nostalgy.

Still i loved apogrypha but i think i will love this expansion more.

Now, get us Walking in Stations (and spaceships) and make it meaningfull.

ps

I'd rather wait for new POSes! Its more likely to happen first, and in my opinion there are a lot of very cool possibilities to do with them.

Oh, please tell me an Intel HD 4000 will still be able to run eve.

Or will this be like the Shader 2.0 Update, where whole generations of GPU become useless because they can not use some special render libraries?

"dynamic dirt levels (older ships showing their age?)"

YES PLEASE! I can also think this would allow dynamic damage on the hull, right?

On the dirty ships idea, I've always thought about what EVE would be like with a system that allowed a ship to "get old". Sort of like that trusty Corellian freighter that looks like crap but can still make the Kessel run in only 18 parsecs! It's not a gamechanger, but I think it would add a whole new dimension to ship ownership. It's the little things that make me excite! :)

Depending on which mass test you were in, you may have been affected by other issues. PBR should not catastrophically reduce your frame rate.

That said, I hope you filled out the survey form at the end of the mass test! Also, if you are able to reproduce any of these issues on Singularity, or you experience them on Tranquility, please use the button on the F12 menu to submit a bug report. Bugs that affect gameplay that badly are top priority.

(Note: The reason that I ask you to fill out a bug report in-game is that bugs submitted that way get a package of information about your hardware configuration and in-game settings, plus it goes straight into our bug tracking system. If I tried to collect that information here, you'd be copying and pasting all day.)

If you dont mind me asking, do you see if the player is using Linux being played through Wine or does it just pop up with the emulated copy of Windows?

The providence is just so... Majestic.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

So, my ATI Radeon HD7970 GPU runs this stuff no problem at max settings using DX9, because dx11 crashes regularly. Everything looks great... except shadows. Shadows cast by solid physical objects onto another portion of the same object, ie the new Blackbird/Falcon/Rook models, are mottled like they were cast by the sun seen through the leaves of a tree, or overhead camoflage.

For those wondering about performance hits on older hardware, I can add one data point.

My system has a Core2 E6750 2.66GHz, 4Gb RAM, GeForce GT630, DX9. I usually run at 1280x1024 with all settings at high, and it's smooth as silk. Noodling around on Sisi/Rhea, I'm using all the same graphic settings, and it's...yep, smooth as silk.

Now personally I'm not a fan of this new PBR, I think it looks duller and washed-out. But that's, like, just my opinion. I'll add that EVE was the reason I upgraded my graphics card, though....

I sincerely hope that in the future, normal space rending will omit or tone down the brightest star / sun auras and nebulae. Some of these sun spots... if I may be permitted, are so damn bright I am temporarily blinded by them, as contrasted by surrounding space. The background brightness is so bad that I cannot read much of 'white' text that accompanies items highlighted on my sensor's overlays.

When I look upward towards a night-time sky... all I see is black. I have never seen a ruddy brown star field, or crimson red, or a golden yellow. Please apply some 'real world' rendering in your next overhaul... and maybe place more 'emphasis' brightening up the 'objects' that are contained in space rather than the areas of space themselves.

Thank you CCP devs and artists for your diligent efforts.

Game dev work is often thankless... in fact sometimes the more you do, the more flak you receive. So I just wanted to add my voice to those who appreciate the work that goes into this fantastic looking universe you have made for us to play in.
