The value of cepters for an aging family man

Two nights and a few hours of ceptering in low sec give me my much needed Eve fix for the week.

Home from work. Dishes, dinner, son to sleep, sneak down into basement mancave. Computer on. Wife interrupts, agree to anything. Logging into Eve. Hopping on to comms.

Pacific time zone so the active fleet is winding down. Because I typically can’t get on earlier I’ve learned to fly an interceptor to be able to catch up wherever the fleet is.

My Malediction is about speed, long point, and scram. Nothing else. Well a damage control helps with the sentry guns from multiple ninja points, and light missiles or drones I can’t outrun.

I don’t care about dps. I don’t care about the light missile nerf.

I notice four Ishtars a scimi and a VNI on scan, and I narrow it down to a planet with seventeen moons. Searching searching. Wife agro. “Buy anything you want honey! I love you!” Darn the distraction caused me to lose track. What moon did I last d-scan?

Another cepter pilot saves the day and calls it. “Seven-fourteen.”

We land and the Ishtars are 200k off a small pos they are bashing. Our fleet holds on gate and wait for us to call them in, but the Ishtars warp off before we can close.

We meander around a bit and then the fleet returns home. I’m not done and in the midst of people saying goodnight I get someone to go back in an Arazu.

Myself and a couple of other cepters follow with a few dps ships catching up. I call for dps to hold two systems out as we hold on gate and the arazu goes in.

The arazu pilot has trouble getting a warp in. The Ishtars dropped their sentry drones and are burning at +2k per second off. We wait impatiently and he says that the pos has popped, and they are burning back.

As is often our style we have no FC per say, and another cepter pilot takes the initiative, jumps and calls everyone in. He manages to catch an Ishtar. Kudos to him.

I screw up as a blast of wife agro from the stairwell distracts. I agree with whatever she’s asking and almost get blapped by curators with my velocity near zero. Thankful I avoided a very embarrassing death, I get my speed up and settle into a comfortable orbit. No need to manual pilot with three cepters holding a single drone boat.

Three maledictions, VNI, Cerb, and a demois, we had for us a solid small fleet. Our prey were there to pop a pos not to pvp. They could have stayed and fought it out. They had the dps and the reps, but they ran and left who we hooked to fry. Or so we thought.

A Falcon appears, and some support frigs to try and break our locks on the Ishtar. We are not dissuaded and finish off the nearly dead Ishtar as points are switched to the Falcon. The ECM boat can’t jam a whole fleet and goes down. We catch a Vengeance for good measure and hold the field.

It was a fun little fight and we throw some GFs in local. I check the map and see eleven ships in space next door. I cajole the few that want to go to bed into checking out the next system.

A bunch of frigates and destroyers are in a small faction site. I hang outside along with the other cepters and an arbitrator surprises us, landing at about zero. We tackle and call in the dps.

We’ve picked up a friendly Ishtar and are feeling pretty comfortable. I remind everyone to watch for the frigate blob and to “fly your own ship” one of our alliance mantras, which means it is the pilot’s responsibility to be aligned, watching d-scan, etc etc. We generally don’t have a single FC orchestrating a fight, but rather a chaotic symphony of point calling and other relevant information.

We try to be a hive mind and heavily rely on cepters to control the fight.

Before the arbitrator goes down help arrives. We pop a fed navy comet as things heat up with more than just enemy frigates. We finally down the arbitrator and go after a Bellicose as a Tornado shows up.

Our Ishtar dies silently, a mistake. We don’t even notice it is gone and move on to the Tornado as the Bellicose dies and a swarm of enemy frigates dance around and through us.

We are well outnumbered and outgunned as our cerb gets caught as we take down the nado. We fight on with just a demois and VNI for dps, plus three cepters and a cloaked Arazu.

Minutes pass and we only manage to pop a navy slicer, but we avoid any more losses in a large part to the dancing distractions of myself and the other cepters.

We’ve had a Harbinger Navy Issue tackled for quite a while and finally bring it down, and things are starting to look up. We are still out-numbered, but the enemy is scattered and disorganized while we are just scattered.

Then our VNI get’s caught. The pilot calls it and we target who has him scrammed and pointed. We kill a Rifter, Crow, and Tristan and he is free. Our rail Deimos saves with the ranged dps.

This breaks them and we catch a Hurricane that they leave to die.

In all we had a couple of big losses, but got a hell of a fight and really tested our cepter piloting.

A half hour of play, and I got what I needed from Eve and went to bed.

Next night, last night. Five domis, a geddon and typhoon are sitting at a large site.

We roll in with four cepters, four t1 cruisers, a Phantasm and a VNI. I really miss links as we dance around the battleships and die. We lose two cepters, though one comes back in a new ship, but we drive off and nearly kill the geddon.

They all have neuts and micro jump drives. We watch velocities, alignment and effects, and we dive in for scrams and then swing out to the edge to hold long point, often having to overheat.

I got neuted out three times, having to warp away and come back. Dancing in low structure, holding a domi so we could kill it slowly is a heart pounding thrill. I tell my wife that I’m fine with babysitting or whatever it is she’s asking me, while I try and catch what’s being said on-comms.

Down two battleships, one that ran and one that popped. They decided to disengage. I overheat my mwd and point and catch a mw jumping domi before it can warp. We savor whittling down this lonely battleship and then we catch his pod.

It wasn’t the complicated fight of the night before, but it really showcased how vital cepters are, especially a clump of them supporting each other and assisting a fleet. We are often priority targets and with our small sig and speed we can slip around damage as our fleet slices and dices.

If you haven’t tried it, fly a cepter and fly a whole squad of them with your small gang.

Also the ship pairs well with limited play time and the distractions of family.

See you around in the angry dark.

What are you doing in EVE if you've got a wife and children? Your obligation is to be a walking zombie wallet now, and not to have fun with the pew-pews. MMOs aren't a privilege for the sex-haves.

It was a decent, if generic story. I'll give you a like, but only because you're old, and need my pity.

I wrote some true EVE stories! And no, they're not of the generic "my 0.0 alliance had lots of 0.0 fleets and took a lot of 0.0 space" sort. Check them out here:

Came expecting a thread about the handiness of an ornamental staff when it comes to middle aged men.

Good read OP.

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

Had to end sometime.

I like that.

Reminds me of the time our smal lgroup is killing two T2 destroyers and other stuff, i'm a solo logi tanking it and attmpting to keep them alive, then they all just warp out leaving me behind.

After I died they mentioned "you didn't tell us you were pointed or even being shot at. I was being shot at the whole time, and mostly pointed the whole time. I didn't expect a sudden warp out, but they couldn't hit the enemies moving to fast. I guess it's important to note to the fleet if you are the solo logi being fired upon and not expect them to automagically know when they are managing their own hectic stuff.

I tend to pull boners sometimes though, like landing on a plex gate at 0. getting stuck. Then dying to whatever warps in.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

How much is the "Wife Agro" skillbook and how long does it take to skill to Level 5? Looking for guidance from grizzled vets.

You'll actually find that the skill book is called Pimp Hand. Not sure about the training time though. I think it's one of those rare skills that actually require practice to become good at.

Wife Aggro V is a prereq for Divorce I. No one knows what the skill levels II thru V are for. You only need it to I.

Hmm well my Japanese wife just bought a set of fancy kitchen knives sooo, not thinking my hand would remain attached much past the first cheek pat.

Ceptering around again atm, zoom zoom. Grrr fighting on gate with neutrals. Sentry guns painful. Thank you ccp for dropping the 15 min timer. Low sec is a million times better with ability to ninja. Cepters get MVP award for enabling fights with a series of points under guns.
