Imagine, if you would, the ability to trade a high slot for a medium slot. Or perhaps a medium slot for a low slot! Heck, could even go the other way around. Would cost a metric ****ton of calibration points, for balance.

Would certainly add another layer of customization to the game.

Thoughts?

Sauce.

Only if they cost 450 Calibration.

i like the idea, but it gives a lot of trouble in rebalance i think

So so many things I can break with this.
I'd love it, but everyone would hate me.
Extra mid on a sliepnir? I think very yes.

Talking more,

Flying crazier,

And drinking more

This would have to literally cripple something or multiple somethings on a ship to be balanced. Too much potential to be abused.

What if you traded all rig slots for an extra slot in the desired position, but still can't have more than 8 slots in any given row...

So, i'd be able to trade my rig slots for an extra mid or low on a Golem, but not a high because it already has 8.

I think that would be a fair trade that is balanced.
This would allow a pvp fit, limited on mid slots, to trade all rig slots for an extra mid to fit that warp scram...

Might sound weird to lose all your rig slots, but considering you'd get extra utility might be worth the trade.

Perhaps the T2 version could add a weapon hard point? (that might be hard to balance).
But, at least a t2 rig would finally get used in PVP....

I put t2 rigs on tons of stuff, it's very affordable these days. 2 T2 Trimarks on a zealot is only 35 mil total for example, 50ish for 3 on a T3.

T2 Core Defense Field Extenders are worth it for nearly all t2 and faction cruisers as well at only 22 mil a pop.

And the versions like Anti Explosive Pump or EM hole plugger get a lot of use as well.

This has been proposed before and I've given it a significant amount of thought. I think the best way to do it is to leave rigs out of the picture, leave high slots unaffected, and make a mid-slot module that gives a low slot, plus a low slot module that gives a mid slot. They should come with penalties, and here's the penalties I came up with:

Cycle Caching System I
takes a medium power slot
+1 low power slot
-10% ship CPU output

Cycle Caching System II
takes a medium power slot
+1 low power slot
-7.5% ship CPU output

Power Re-routing System I
takes a low power slot
+1 medium power slot
-10% ship powergrid output

Power Re-routing System II
takes a low power slot
+1 medium power slot
-7.5% ship powergrid output

Broken. I immediately take a mid slot, use it to add a low slot, then stick a Reactor Control Unit in it, giving me more PG than I did before adding the item. Congrats you have effectively added a midslot powergrid module. Same with midslot CPU enhancers, midslot armor mods, lowslot shield resist mods...

Lots of ships have both an excessive amount of fitting left over, and a preference for one kind of slot over another. Ishtars for example have plenty of powergrid left over, and would love to swap a low for a midslots in order to fit tackle, more tank, or another drone utility mod. A -7.5% PG hit is completely inconsequential to them.

There are a ton of situations like that where it would provide massive boosts to ships.

So nope, really not going to work.
