Hello all! I just have a curious question to ask. I came up with an idea for a story in a dream I had the other night. Ever since then, I've been trying to flesh it out, finding details and other things to make it a whole story. I was wondering if it would be acceptable to use the setting of The Battle of Pike's Landing, which was described in Tony Gonzales' second book, Templar One, and use it, just for the beginning of my story. I would be describing the role of a random capsuleer in the battle, no one that was described in any detail in the books. It would be nice to know if it's okay to use that battle, or if I need to just make up a battle of my own to start my story with. Thanks.

I'm no legal expert, but as far as I understand it depends on local copyright laws and your intentions. If you plan to publish a novel then you're going to need more than simple forum permission.

Is your intent for unpublished fan-fiction? Such as posting stories on websites, the forums, or anywhere else that has no commercial gain for yourself? Then it's absolutely fine. Especially if you're crediting the author and source material (which is generally very obvious with fan fiction).

Thanks for the info. It is just for personal entertainment, sharing on the internet, and stuff like that. I don't have any intention of publishing my work for profit in any way, shape, or form. I was just planning on writing it and posting it here on these forums, and maybe a writing site that I'm on.

Plenty of that already happening in the forum and in blogs, you'll be fine. Be sure to post the work here when it's written for all of us to read! :)

Disclaimer: Not a lawyer. Post based on some quick research.

Under US copyright law, fan fiction exists in a legally grey zone. In general, so long as you are not generating profit from your fan fiction or damaging the value of the original work, you are safe.

That said, I've never known CCP to shut down fan fiction of any kind - indeed, they've been openly supportive of such derivative works.

Lawyer here.

Not the slightest idea of icelandic laws. But I would bet Esna is right for 99% occidental culture countries.
