"Can't use html" errors

We have all these bbcode buttons above the text editing area when we're writing a message for these forums. And yet, when I try to use one, like putting something in italics, I get the subject error message and the text editing area is cleared. WTF is up with that?

I suppose there's a better place to put this question, but it isn't obvious to me where that might be.
