Thanks for all the comments guys!

I was halfway through character creation when I realized my integrated graphics card was unable to handle even that simple step (couldn't even play the intro without significant lapses)

...So I'm waiting on a legit graphics card to arrive before I dive in. Probably the only thing I'll miss about WoW were the low system req's, lol.

oh! and one other question, regarding careers. How long, if I focus heavily on it, will it take for me to develop the skills necessary to build high-end and valuable products as a builder/industrialist? I hear it's not profitable for quite a while.

Thats what irks me about EvE too. Most MMOs design to make sure many customers can use it. EvE doesn't but they blame the gameplay style on EvE on lower subs rather than the possibility that most people don't have "THE hardware" to run it. The only reason I'm able to play at all after they removed the dual version of EvE which consisted of a low GFX version and a high GFX version (which is what caused me to quit the first time), is that I got a card which could bump gameplay up from 20 FPS in SC2 to 55 FPS. And EvE still has to be set all to minimum.

Wow.

That must be an ancient setup you are using.

I'm running EVE on a 6 year old laptop...no problems with high-settings.

The moment I open a 4th client, I have to scale down the settings though.

Actually it's only 2.5 years old. Desktop with 8 gigs ram and 1.5intel processor. Was very surprised at the problems I was having, literally couldn't click on a new hairstyle in the char creation screen without enduring lag and loading bar, lol.

and so I'm a blank square for now haha.

Oh, and other question while I have someone's attention... Memory is the primary attribute if I want to specializing in mining and manufacturing right? with intellect as a secondary?

When I played for 2 months a few years ago I blasted through all the "learning" skills first...now I am reading that they are gone? What a bummer.

If you used to have learning skills on this character then you should have a batch of unallocated skillpoints that you can distribute to other skills.
(NOTE: unallocated SP is only given when a skill is removed from the game... or CCP massively fucks up and the servers are down for more than a day)

And yes... industry and science skills are based around the attributes of memory and intelligence. Don't take it TOO seriously though. Attributes only shave off a few minutes to a few hours on low-end, short skills and a day or three with very high-end, long skills.
The cumulative time savings will only become apparent if you play for more than a few months to a year.

First of all, thanks for taking the time to give me some info!

I played EVE very briefly several years ago, but had to stop because of time constraints. I am about to get back into it, but I remember there being a massive learning curve with very few tutorials to guide new players. Is this still the case, or has the process of learning the ropes gotten easier?

Secondly, I am aware that EVE is one of the longest running MMO's, and I keep hearing two very different stories. Some say it's winding down, and that the veteran players are so dominant and well established that there's little chance for a newb to make much impact. Others say the game is still going strong with no end in sight, and there's plenty of time ahead of new players to catch up. Which do you think is true?

Thanks!

Noobies can still make a difference wherever. I've found faction warfare to good for our low skill set as frigates are used are lot. This gives you time to work on. Fitting/support skills before going to larger ships. Check my blog for a beginners perspective.

The Learning skills were removed and those at the time who had them received skillpoints back to use on other skills. The other thing they did was to increase the base attributes so the effect of those skills is now built-in from the start.

As for the learning curve I can recommend a few sources:

Eve Uni's wiki. This is a very decent wiki with a lot of good game information. The search feature is fairly intuitive, also.

Class library. They have several recorded classes on a variety of Eve subjects.

Public classes. They have public classes going and anyone is welcome to attend them.

And finally, once you're in game (again) one of the better "Help" channels is "E-Uni". It's one of the Help channels you find on your chat channels. Lots of people there with a variety of experience and everyone is willing to help answer any questions.

Good luck with everything, and welcome back to Eve. Smile

Those two things are actually the most graphics intensive. I run on integrated graphics and I can run just fine (albeit on lowish graphics settings). The only thing I have a problem running is the character editor.

How did I get such a good looking character then? I guess it's just in my DNA...
