Want to have more active combat instead of drones

I'm returning after a few years hiatus and was surprised to find out my old character was at 8 mil SP.

I've been dabbling in various activities since subbing again and found that most of my combat skills centered on drones. I was trying lvl 3 missions in hopes of jumping into lvl 4s with a t2 sentry domi, but that seems boring now. I don't want to warp in, drop my sentries and then just tank the damage coming in with the big domi armor tank.

I recently started doing high sec combat sites including a few 4/10s with a vexor using 250 mm gauss and 3 x Garde II. It's a little more active since I can't tank the sites all that well with the vexor, so I have to maintain range.

Nevertheless, I'm interested in doing active combat in my plexes and missions so I could use some help figuring out what might fit in a reasonable amount of time. I know i can't switch to a Mach within a week and blaze through everything, but I'd prefer not to wait over a month to at least try something. Right now my turrets feel like wet noodles and I feel forced to use my drones.

Here's my current skills

with your current skills a brutix would be the best you can fly, i wouldn't bring it into lv4 tho.
as a short term goal train for large hybrid weapon and go for a mega or hype, the best imho would be a domi navy so you can still use your drone skill but you have some bonused guns to keep you entratained while drone do their job.

Do any of my skills qualify me for some other race's common PVE ships? Since I'm pretty well set for armor tanking, does a certain set of other race ships fit with that where I would just need to train the ship skills and the weapons? My hybrid weapon skills aren't too far along so it seems like that is the easiest area to switch to missiles, lasers, etc.

gunnery support skills like surgical strike, motion prediction, etc. work for all kind of turrets so you can skill those while you clear your mind on what kind of ship you want to train for.
as a basic guideline gallente and amarr armor tank, caldari and minmatar shield tank, there are exception to this especially for minmatar.

if you are training hybrid weapons right now you are on the right track, they are a very good weapon system for both PVE and PVP, laser are cool but they are really good only when you get to the point you can use T2 guns and ammo, projectile weapons are in a sad state atm they work ok if you put them on ship like the machariel but overall they are the weakest turrets right now.
missiles are decent but tbh if you are skilling turrets i would stick with that, finish you training in gallente weapons and hulls and when you get to the point you can fly their T2 ships with T2 fitting (especially the guns) training for another race will be alot easier.

If you feel like taking the time to train into it, a T3 ship can do just about anything combat. They're also extremely versatile. It's a long train, but very worth it if you plan on doing combat sites regularly.

My Velator is overpowered.

Well one good (bad) thing is that you have not really heavily invested into any specific race or weapon system.

If you want armor/gun ships Amarr is a good race, otherwise Gal is he next best bet.
