Easy answer is griefing

But what is the real benefit of sitting an alt ruining someone else's economy and overal well-being during insane amounts of time every single day? I understand it can be fun to do it once in a while, but what about those who keep their alts for months 23/7 over a same system?

I mean they are wasting electricity, efforts logging in right after downtime, and of course a whole character/account this means 15 bucks a month or 850m isk, you choose...

What is the point? Personal reasons in example revenge? Childhood trauma?

Everyone knows that AFK cloakers are terrible people IRL who have nothing else to do except ruin the play of others and grief them until they quit the game. Because they're all about them tears.

First it can disrupt certain corps ratting practices. Some corps don’t allow ratting with cloaker in system. Second it can lull the system users into a false since of security where they go ahead and rat in something shiny then BOOM hot drop.

I have never been opposed to the campy cloaker but it should fall under the same guidelines as the rest of the afk game play ccp has tried to remove.

They should be able to camp but there should be some sort of interaction required by the end user.

When an afk person not only ruins your economy but also your game experience, it's time to stop playing the game and go outside.

Since they're away from the keyboard I'd say they have no motivation at all.

CCP has no sense of humour.

Define "griefing."

How can something be fun if you're literally not there to do said "thing?"

You're wasting electricity by powering up your computer and making this terrible poast.

The easy answer isn't always the best.

I've been afk while cloaked many times:

Sometimes hiding since I was outnumbered.
Sometimes taking a nap while waiting for some target to do something stupid.
Sometimes taking a quick break for some odd reason.
Sometimes....

Sometimes I wasn't afk and I was waiting to pounce, and that is what bothers many. They don't know.

They don't know if the effort they are taking to guard their friends is really needed.
They don't know if they can't sneak out really quick to do something without support is ok.
They don't know...

And that's the real point. Its called psychological warfare and not too many games allow for that.
This one does, as it should.

It probably isn't a bad way to lull you into a false sense of security. Get up in the morning... turn on your computer and log in your cloaky toon, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed. After a few days everyone is used to you being there.... start hitting the belts looking for your unlucky ratter. Pop. If you just show up to the sys anyone ratting and paying attention otherwise warps to a safe. There was a guy, Podruski or something, who used to do that all the time to me when I was new to the game in Fountain. I lost more than a few hard-earned Ravens to that guy.

Wrong.

PvP does not require me to "benefit" from it. It justifies itself, always. And "ruining your economy" is pretty much the point. Inflicting economic damage is always justified too.

There used to be ways to get paid by people to afk cloak against specific people's renters. PL renters in particular would often pay you to go away, too.

Yes, in a PvP game people are allowed to decide to disrupt your gameplay, just because they feel like it. If you aren't willing to leave your POS because of one red in local, you damned well deserve it too.

The answer is in the question.

PVP ain't just shooting people. It also includes denial of acquiring assets. Be it ore, salvage or bounties.

When all the bears afk dock or afk pos up to avoid content, the only way to counter that and possibly create content in that system is to afk cloak.

Afk cloaking isn't the problem, it's the solution to the broken mechanic that is free, instant intel from local.

You assume too much. Maybe the cloaker went to take a dump and died on the toilet. And there you are being all buttmad when someone might have freaking died, man! That's cold!

I imagine it is exactly the same hunting behaviour as a crocodile, it floats close to shore, just it's eyes visible, the prey do not know how big it is, how strong,....... Or how hungry!Shocked
It can wait for weeks, the prey learns to disregard it, they go back to drink, safe today, safe tomorrow, then Snap, dead carrier oops antelope.

Antelopes hate cloaky afk campers too.
Doesn't matter how much they complain, stilll can't ban crocodiles.

Well, If you assume that someone needs to be banned not to want to talk to you, you may a created a new shift of the intelligence bellcurve.

But my wife shares exactly the same opinion of you as I do, hardly surprising is it?
