Assault ship is a class of ship
amarr frigate is a class of ship

if I have amarr frigate trained i can fly amarr frigates
if i have assault ships trained i can fly assault ships

but since assault ships are based on a particular hull, you need to be able to have mastered that hull, but the purpose of the assault ship is the same.

Different t1 hulls have different purposes, yet all assault ships have the same purpose.

Makes perfect sense to me at least.
