New Notifications System = Free Intel

I hadn't played around with the new notifications system and frankly wasn't really interested in it. It's a little window that shows notifications.

Big deal right?

It turns out that yes, yes it is a big deal.

One of the notifications in the new system is watchlist notifications. Whenever anyone on your watchlist logs on or off, a notification pops up. This is no different than previously, except now those notifications stay in your notification log so you can read them later and know when these events occurred.

Try this: Roll an alt, watchlist everyone you want to watch, turn off all other notifications, and keep that alt logged in 23.5/7. You'll have the login habits of of your watchlist recorded for you in your notifications logs. You don't have to be at-keyboard for a moment to do this, aside from logging your alt in.

So...who wants free intel?

Now if only we had a nice third party app to collect that data and present it in a nice, easy to read format.

It would be all to horrible because of how metagame works nowdays:

Add option: Allow people not on my watchlist to see my online status Yes/No

So that if option is set to "No"; if two people are on eachothers watchlists: Yäj can see when buddy logs on and is online!
While: Hmmm, No clue if player X that is FC/Bridge for Entity A is online or if Entity B is logging on dreads for potential trap.

Oh dear do we have to /SCOUT/ and not get free /INTEL/?

Whos with me? ^^

See. To much game mechanics depend on watchlisting people.
It was certainly a good idea behind it 'Ofc you should be able to see if people//buddies are online' but that is now how metagame evolved to use the mechanic.

Oshit they are logging on dreads/supers/titanbridge that sits in system X that will hit us here: GTFO!!!!! NAOAOAOOW!!!

Changing this dated mechanic and promote actively seeking out information can't be a bad thing.

you stiil have to find them yourself,
and locators only make it easy when your static so dont pull that one out.
also, watchlisting an alliance is a massive pain in the arse so your "free" intel actually takes a bit of work to get in any useful quantity

"Free" in this instance refers to "ISK-Free". Time and diligence are still required of course.

Not to belittle you empire war dec concerns, but login of titan and mom pilots/holders is a bit more important than the 10 man corp you are 'hunting' in Motsu. The idea is doomed for reasons far beyond the Weevils Warrior Awiance.

This type of "monitoring" isn't anything new though, it has been possible to do this for years - CCP just made it available for anyone to see it directly in their client.

Agreed. Being able to collect the data directly, if inefficiently, through the client is rather handy though.
