Disclosure: i'm gonna be long on it at least till it hits 4500 bid, mostly because i think it makes zero sense for the rarest mineral to be the cheapest in ISK/hr mining.

Other than supply and demand of course Cool.

My theory is that when everyone stops mining it because veldspar is better the supply will get cut off abruptly.

This is of course assuming that people mine to maximize their ISK/hr which might be wrong, many people apparently look at isk/m3.

The reason your theory fails is that it has to be mined out to flip the large/enormous asteroid belts. The small and medium dont benefit from good system security, so their average payout per hour is so much less, that even with the worthless omber and low value mercoxit (which is mined at 60% of the rate of other minerals per hour), the large and enormous are a better choice to mine.

As for mercoxit being the 'rarest', it is among the most plentiful in terms man-hours needed to mine out, in the enormous anyway. There is way more of it than is needed in eve.
