Bendy warp tunnels.

Forgive me if it has been suggested before.

Wouldn't it be cool if instead of the warp tunnel taking you in a straight line from A to B, it was bendy and you could see it snaking ahead of you in space?

Wouldn't it be cool if while your ship snaked through the tunnel, movable parts like the little flaps on the side of the Typhoon, or the hinged parts of the Garmur shifted as if they were steering the ship?

Obviously would have to be totally cosmetic and no different in actual time to taking you from A to B in a straight line.

While I like the idea in theory, there are enough people complaining about some of the tunnel effects giving them motion sickness that adding more movement to it is likely bad. Other reasons this is not something that makes much sense:

  1. It uses large amounts of dev time on a single cosmetic feature with no impact on core gameplay
  2. adds to the usage of system resources that aren't well optimized (python plays mediocre with lots of moving things)
  3. Increases the bells and whistles in something thats already visually over the top to many people.
  4. Does not have a good reason besides "looks cool" and most of the art department ought to be hard at work fixing the ships with low poly models still.

Flaps and other things steer things on Earth because of the air resistance going towards it. In space there isn't any air to do this... So it would be pointless. Ships in space steer with the use of thrusters.

Thrusters have nothing to do with warp drive.

And depending on which theory of warp travel we use, mass distribution relative to warp core relative to warp field could make massive differences.

If we're going to use EVE's theory of warp travel - which we totally should, given that this is EVE and the theory is available to read - navigation during warp is impossible in the first place.

I came in here expecting this to be one of those "make warp tunnels curve to avoid planets and stations and flying through things" threads and was prepared to say "better to make the warping-through-a-planet tunnel the default warp tunnel all the time so you never see what you're warping through", but this wasn't that kind of thread. Fortunately, I got to say it anyway.

Add me to that list of people that find the current warp effect unsettling and this would put it over the top requiring me to look away from the screen, or close my eyes during warps.

Alter the idea and give us the option to turn off the warp animation like we can with the camera shake and I may re-consider support for an idea like this.
