Stupid Invention Question - using optional ingredients lowers odds.

I have an Inferno heavy missile BPC set up to invent an Inferno Fury Heavy Missile Blueprint

I'm confused by what happens when I add optional ingredients.
By using a Caldari Navy Inferno Heavy Missile and
an esoteric augmentation
my Success Probability is 33.3 %

But if I remove both optional items
my Success Probability rises to 47.6 %

This makes no sense to me, I was under the impression that having more samples and tools would *increase* your success chances.

Can anyone explain the math?

Thanks

Its always a good idea to read what the decryptor you are using actually does...

Esoteric Augmentation:

Probability Multiplier: -40%
Max. Run Modifier: +9
Mineral Efficiency Modifier: -2
Production Efficiency Modifier: +1

In other words it makes you much less likely to succeed, and your resultant blueprint uses more materials. However your resultant blueprint will have 9 more runs than normal and will be built slightly faster. Your calculations should tell you whether or not a certain decryptor is worth it or not, just throwing them randomly into invention jobs is MUCH more likely to harm your results than help.

Meta items increase success.

Decryptors change any of:
- success chance
- runs
- ME
- TE
and can either increase or decrease any of them (except runs, those can only be increased)
