Patch/DDOS Quandary

So there I was, merrily flying my Raptor through some lowsec jumps, praying not to hit bump into a smartbomb camp when the dreaded socket error appears.

I tried to reconnect through the launcher (don't judge me) multiple times for about 10 minutes noticing that even the launcher wasn't loading properly, at which point I assumed "meh it's probably some kinda file corruption, I'll revalidate the files through Steam" (again, please don't judge me)...

894 files not validated, 6GB download begins...sigh...on a <1Mbit connection...double sigh...remember that I'd intended to add a longer skill before patch day in case the patch was a big download as well...triple sigh...

As it stands, I have 12hrs left in my skill queue and another 4hrs of downloading before I finish revalidating the launcher to then be followed by downloading the Oceanus patch...

Questions:

How big is the Oceanus patch?

Bearing in mind I can get about 1GB every 3 hours, am I gonna miss out on training time?

Is this worth petitioning for the potential lost skill training since the initial issue was caused by the DDOS and out of my control?

Ty for your time, I'm sorry in advance for using the launcher and Steam to run Eve Oops

I got bugged for ~600 MBs today
How is your connection so slow?
Did they give you MB or Mb?
One of those is 8x the speed of the other

well it's always worth you trying a petition, since it only takes five minutes of your own time

see if you can ask them to add a skill to the queue for you, instead of reimbursement later? it might be easier

1Mbit, not Byte, I am aware of the difference :)
- FWIW My peak download speed overnight shows as 86.9 KB/s and when I started the 6GB download it said 1day 5hrs til completion Roll

I live in the third world area of Kent, England (only 40mins from London lol) and have 5 miles of copper wiring between me and the nearest exchange, there's nothing I can do about it except move house and/or be incredibly patient and find other things to do whilst hogging my bandwidth with one download)

I've filed a preemptive petition as suggested by Benny ty for the suggestion :)

Only if you enjoy waiting a really long time to get a "no".

Well the waiting itself is a fixed variable due to the internets, so I have the choice of being proactive or sitting there like a lemon, I guess I know which you'd choose :)

You are disoriented. Blackness swims toward you like a school of eels who have just seen something that eels like a lot.

Let me introduce you to something that might help when the launcher seems to be broken.

I came across this technique in my googling last night/morning after the mistake of pressing 'Validate Files'

-> Due to running through Steam it doesn't appear to be an option for me (will double check that it wasn't hastily removed by the validate process when this finishes)

Can you get to a public wifi location?
They may be faster
Just remeber to read the EULA, Fsecure is asking for firstborn children as part of their provisions right now
You could also get a burner phone and set up tethering, I suggest using easytether as it modifies the phone to a usb modem
get the 0.9.3 apk as it provides the finished ime code needed to activate the new 1.1 apk and host driver for free

3G would be faster than what you describe, and I use it often

It's way too late for me to go and find public wifi and I don't believe the brick of a phone I use has even 1 G, let alone 3 of the buggers...

so it's a race, 2GB left to download, 6hrs49minutes left on my skill queue, the internet might just make it but then have to schedule tomorrow morning so that I can grab a couple of minutes to sort out my skill queue and hopefully dock up my Raptor somewhere when I should be leaving the house....or miss out on the whole day's training....which woulda been nicely spent on Large Blaster Spec V :(

Right now either CCP is being DDoSd again or they have soo much download demand on the patch that it pinched their bandwidth off to nothing.

On a 30Mbps connection I am getting maybe 300kbps which is about 1/10th my normal download speed.

Ah, Kent! The very Heart of Darkness!

Perhaps you need to move to an actual village, as rural fibre roll-out may not reach your current hovel until sometime in the next century!

I felt your pain, brother. I lived in Suffolk where it was customary to reduce the download speed to less than 56k dialup and when the option for BT infinite came around, they went "Lol no, move to a city peasants".

Filthy peasants!

They should all move to Oxfordshire or perhaps Cheshire, where the peasants are somewhat aspirational.
