Changing default audio playback device mid-game

I have recently (past few weeks) noticed that every time I change my default audio playback device in Windows 7 while my EVE client is open, it results in my EVE client making horrible loud noises that I can only describe as 'digital whale song'.

By "changing my default audio playback device" I mean piping the sound out of the headphones instead of the speakers or vice versa. This has been common practice for me for several years, but the horrible loud noises are a recent development. I believe they probably started with the Hyperion release or possibly Kronos.

I will be happy to provide any more information if able.
