All I can say is Awesome!

I expect this will also have a large effect on reducing lag in large fleet battles. It may only be fractions of a second per ship, but when looking for +3000 ships, across +3000 clients, it really adds up.

There may be a few bugs and typo's to work out, but I see this as a potential massive stability improvement to the core game. The added feature of preparing the system for future ship customizations is just an added bonus for me.

Can CCP take this opportunity to fix the textures for the Khanid ships, so they have the proper black/white contrast, not murky black/murky grey with a hint of whatever colour space you're in?

I'll take a few minutes tomorrow to have a look at this.

That said, in general if you think the look of a ship is broken or that what you're seeing is clearly not what was intended, please hit F12 and use the in-game bug reporting tool to file a bug report, preferably with a screen capture. Attaching the output of dxdiag (if you're on Windows) is also very helpful just in case it's a driver or graphics card issue.

Seriously speaking, if you did think that all of a number of similarly-shaded objects had a consistent graphic technical problem (as opposed to art direction that you don't like), you probably should file a single bug report and provide in it a list of other affected objects that you may know about.

the problem is that this art direction is disgusting. all the colour is gone - grey and teal.

Because the Legacy Code has too much Psssssssssssssssh, nothing will ever get fixed until CCP stop wasting money on failed sparkle MMOs and instead rewrite the entire backend of EvE from scratch.

I am surprised to hear this is happening so late in EvE's development. It seems like CCP would have been using asset management software for some while to manage variations in texture, rigging, and modelling, but that's good to hear it's getting attention. Going to be impossible to sell aurum ship skins 'one day' without some way to reskin during design time as well as runtime.

You may want to have a look at "Production Pipeline Fundamentals" when thinking these challenges through. It's a well paved path.
