Magnetometric Sensor Compensation so how does this work, protection or is it related to ship equipment modules ?

The chance to be jammed is "jamming strength"/"sensor strength of the ship", so lets say the jamming str. is 5 and your sensor str. is 10 then there's a 50% chance per cycle to be jammed. If you increase your sensor strength to 15 then the chance becomes 5/15th = 33%.

Every race has their own sensor type; Radar for Amarr ship, Ladar for Minmatar etc etc. Gallente uses Magneto sensors, so if you fly Gall ships and you train that skill you lower the chance to be jammed, would you switch to fly an Amarr ship then that magneto skill will do nothing and you should also train the Radar skill.

It increases the sensor strength of ships using magnetometric sensors (Gallente ships, IIRC).


Sensor strength has 2 effects:

1) The higher it is, the lower is the probability of being jammed by ECM. ECM has a certain strength; the probability of being jammed (by each 20 second cycle of each jammer used against you) is exactly ECM strength divided by your sensor strength

2) The higher it is, the most difficult it is for somebody using combat probes to pinpoint your ship's position in space, and warp to you, and possibily kill you :). The 'probing difficulty' is proportional to your sensor strength divided by your ship's signature radius (so, also having a small sig radius makes you harder to probe)


TL;DR it helps you both in not getting jammed and in not getting probed down

If you are interested in jamming and countering then you can take this further, since you may well have more than one ECM module directed at you.

It makes it slightly simpler if we look at the chance of not being jammed, so in the example quoted you have a 50% chance of being jammed, which equals a 50% chance of not being jammed per cycle.

If 2 ECMs are used on you, your chance of not being jammed is 50% x 50% = 25%
3 ECMs gives 50% x 50% x 50% = 12.5%
And with 4 ECMs on you it is 50% x 50% x 50% x 50% = 6.25%

If you increase your sensor strength, as in the example above, from 10 to 15 the chances of not being jammed per cycle are:
1 ECM = 66.6%
2 ECM = 43.5%
3 ECM = 28.7%
4 ECM = 18.9%

I won't go into all the consequences of these numbers. If you want to get involved in EWAR, either applying it or defending against it, it's worth putting the calculations into a spreadsheet and seeing the results of various strategies.

Chance to Jam = 1 - (1 - Jam Strength / Ship Sensor Strength) ^ Number of Jammers

Explanation:

It only takes one successful jam, so you can have three failures, two failures, one failure, or no failures.

Success = jam strength / sensor strength
Failure = 1 - success

Chance all jammers fail = failure ^ number of jammers

Chance at least one jammer succeeds = 1 - Chance all jammers fail
