I finally got around to doing an actual 'Anal' character search.

I had no idea EVE players were so creative!

Well, it certainly seems to me that if you change one you have to change em all. 332 petitions or should I name them all in one?

In solidarity with the victim, I have decided to name my next toon Tommy Tallywacker.

I realize that CCP has made some dubious hires but there's no way things are that bad.

There was a corp called your censored word mining buddies... and also search for name for a woman that ends in UNT (and I don't mean Aunt) and then... well yeah... there's more. But as you stated, consistency.

Some time ago, we created an alt named The Dirtiest Taco for the sole purpose of killright fraud.... you know, gank him, put up killrights in the hundreds of millions, sometimes billions, then go out in Velators and make bank off the people with too much isk and uber shiny ships doing gate camping blobs.

It worked, we made a lot of bank, especially off Marmite, who we'd just finished a wardec with at the time. It was fun to get some back on them.

Anyway, the toon name.... most of you will probably get it.

If you want somebody's name changed, go and report him. That's how it works. It really shouldn't surprise you that a member of a vocal minority got sanctioned for breaking the norm, whereas people that lay low get to keep their... names.

Putting aside all questionable discussion about where the line is in EVE, and focusing on the issue of character names, i can honestly say that i highly disagree with CCP's decision to change Anal's name.

This isn't a scenario where a week old character is reported with an offensive name, which i imagine happens fairly frequently. The individual here has had the same name for 7 years which, to put into perspective as others have mentioned, is longer than many employees have been working for CCP itself. This character has openly flown around and participated in new eden for over 85 months with no or minimum protest, objection, or grievance.

Don't be so quick to dismiss this. Again, 7 years with no action taken against Anal Canal. I believe at this point its safe to say the decision to force a name change is less of an issue of whether or not it is found to be offensive in EVE, and was more based on the personal Morales of the ISD (or whoever it was that responded to the petition forcing the change. I'm assuming ISD).

To me, this is not OK. I think it is the responsibility of every individual at CCP, working under CCP, or volunteering for CCP, to strive for equality for all citizens/players regardless of their personal ideals. I understand it can be difficult at times to draw the line, but it must be done, lest the alternative take place. Imagine an administration where all you have to do is find the right person with the right ideals to pull the strings you want pulled. Is this fair and just? Having one ISD wave their hands at a petition and state "nothing is at fault" while another later on tells a player they are in the wrong and are now being punished for the very same issue and circumstances is inexcusable. And in this scenario, where said issue is a character name, there is no variable that should be affected.

The only conclusion i am left with is that Anal Canal's name was changed solely because the ISD, as an individual, did not agree with the actions that Anal was committing, and punished the player directly by fore fitting his name. A lone individual with administrative authority acted on his personal feelings as judge, jury, and executioner. And if this sits well with you, then you have my concern against your mental state.
