Transverse: the trainwreck

As some may know, Piranha Games Interactive (PGI), developers of Mechwarrior Online (MWO), have launched crowdfunding for a new game.

The game, called Transverse, is a space themed sandbox MMO whose features aren't exactly clear atm... but that is the lesser of its issues.

I suggest you reading this article at TMC, to get a glimpse.

Some bullet points:

Transverse was meant to be (?) Wing Commander Online, but now it is something dfiferent, with ships ripped from ressembling like... well, everything from Star Citizen to Battlestar Galactica.
The launch video must be seen to be believed. Yes, it's for real. The parody is this one.
All comments for the video were suspended after reaching a 10:1 ratio of negative vs positive
The pledge campaign has been... huh... successful up to 73 persons and 6,410 $
That, despite the site being a hog at 3.7 megabytes.
Also, stretch goals are funny. The first is to be able to fly in space. The second one is to be able to fit stuff in your ships. The third one is to be able to fight in space. Seriously.
PGI created a subreddit for the game. Their PR personnel ended up shadowbanned in a matter of hours for violating Reddit rules
And more and more...

It's a total trainwreck.

Oh, and last but not least:

PGI owns the Wing Commander IP. Yes, seriously. Shocked

Reading his pathetic weaseling and the unsympathetic responses on their own forum made my day. I sort of feel bad for the poor guy, but not really, since he totally had it coming. Trainwreck indeed.

Oh God... they just edited the stretch goals.

Now if they make it to 500,000 $, they will develop an alpha build of the whole game and look for additional funding... failing that goal, they will return the money to backers.

Numbers are 27 days remaining, 81 backers, 6.990 $.

It is unknown how many backers are employees & friends & relatives. What?

I read that too. It's the saddest thing. I mean the strech goals. I mean look at them. LOOK@THEM!!! 500k-liftoff, 1mil-flying, 1,5mil-building ships and 2 mil-combat. Meet all the goals and you might have something resembling an actual game. What an amazing deal. Sign me up.

That forum thread is still the best. I'm only a dozen pages in, but so far only 1 post has been even remotely sympathetic. Everyone else is just bursting schadenfreude and posting variations of "Karma's a *****!" and "I told you so".

So after reading the TMC article (good read, thanks for linking it) I had an epiphany.

Nikolai Lubkiewicz of Piranha Games blames Mittani and the Goons from SA for the bad reception of his games.

Dinsdale Pirannha of Pirannha Corp blames Mittani and Goonswarm for everything bad in EVE.

Now what a coincidence that is...

Blink

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Y'know, while this trainwreck is horrible, it's not yet the worst that could happen. Somewhere, someone convinced them that tying their Wing Commander IP to this Travesty (oops a typo Pirate ) was a bad thing to do.
Imagine if was the newest WC...

More then one lovely game has been ruined as of late by quick cash grabs; have some examples: Dungeon Keeper 3 (brower game) Sacred 3 (linear action game), the newest Sim City etc, ruining the once beloved franchise with a horrible game.

Yes, that's the nicest part... they figured that their transhumanist mumbojumbo was better than WC IP -we can't thank them enough, albeit that probably was because someone already was developing WC Online.

What really baffles me of this disaster is that PGI intended to sell another game before they finished their last one. What did they think that would be the response?

"Oh yes, as you didn't delivered MWO yet, let's give you even more money for yet another project". What?

If you spent 5 hours playing it, you're roughly halfway (if you took all side-quests & bonus-levels) in the campaign, total playtime for campaign is 3 to 12 hours (depending how fast or throughrough you want to be) Also: levels, no exploring a vast area, but linear action levels.

5 hours on Sacred 2 was nothing. that was, at the very least, a game that took some 60 hours to clear totally, with expansions.
