I can log in, make a character selection just fine. The program then displays a fuzzy view of the cabin, the word 'LOADING', music plays, for aboutr 15-30 secs. Then EVE locks up.. Only way to get out of it is to reboot. Running Ubuntu 14.04 with Wine 1.6. Any suggestions appreciated.

You might consider consulting the 14.04 thread.

But I suspect you have 'Load Station Environment' checked. Hit settings before you login, graphics, and uncheck 'Load Station Environment'.

E: This is known as 'Captains Quarters' everywhere else, it is just under settings that it is known as this. Who the hell knows why. But Linux does it badly.

Also get an updated Wine version.

1.6 works fine. That's not the problem.

Looking how many improvements are happening in Wine from version to version i cannot understand why stand on an older version. Even better get the Command Stream (CSMT) version of wine for a nice performance gain.

You stay on an older version because it is more stable. And reliable gameplay when you're having difficulty is more important.

This is a simple checkbox for him to try. We see the results. If it fails, we look at his graphics driver (more likely the culprit). After that, then you can look at going to a bleeding edge version of something. You don't start with the completely painful and unnecessary steps.

This statement is not valid with Wine and EVE, as ...

1) both are not in a fixed state...EVE itself is a fast moving target

2) WINE is far from finished and steadily improving; it doesn't even implement all functions EVE uses and we are lucky it works anyway. So there is much need for improvement on this side.

3) If you wan't to have a working combination, check out Winehq for validated tests. There are people who check what works and what not, then you can decide to upgrade or not.

If you know that stable wine works, why add an extra repo and risk breakage with every wine dev update?

I mean, I do that too, but I enjoy fixing **** so much, that I frequently deliberately break my system just to have some fun, but not everyone is like that.
