On one character I'm following the BNI skill plan, 400d long and then I'll probably train into.. Um. HACs, SBs, HIDs and then I dunno.

My now three characters are all trained by profession:

1 x pvp
1 x scout
1 x industry/hauler

Looking at their skill sets, the only one that's beginning to deviate from a strong focus on role is the scout, which I'm also training some pvp skills on now, but only to compliment what I'm training on my main.

Other than that, the skills are pretty strongly focussed on maximum flexibility in a single profession.

If it's not worth training to 5, then it's not worth training.

I have 30M SP characters with 40 skills injected. To say I like focused characters with a solid gold EB sheet would be an understatement.

My philosophy is that 3 is the minimum, 4 is good, 5 is specialization and generally not needed- unless you want to specialize in that thing.

And I want to be good at everything I fly.

But I also want to fly a lot of things- being a perfect assault frigate pilot doesn't help much if your fleet calls for more shield logi, for example.

So I pick a ship I can't fly yet, get it to all-4s with the occasional 3 if the skill doesn't really matter, then decide a new ship I want...

If I start to train something it has to be at level 5 even if I will never use it.

And thanks to my ocd I now have to get mastery level 5 in every minmatar ship Lol

I'm currently working on getting Mastery 5 on all subcaps.

Once that is done I may get all the industrial hulls to 5 as they can be pretty fun for surprise PVP.

Up until now I have done min/max with the attribute remaps but going forward that may not be possible due to mopping up random skills all over the place. We will see.

Back then I trained for big ships and raw firepower with my main and smaller ships, ewar and stealth with my 'main alt'. After a couple years it of course started to overlap and now my three main chars have mostly the same skills, basically almost everything about combat. With the exception that my main cannot do anything with missiles.

I still don't have any skills in industry, mining, trading, science or manufacturing. And probably never will. I hope they will not suddenly change those parts of the game into something fun instead of tedious clickfests.

To elaborate on what kind of skills i focus on, for me cruisers are of the most interest on this char, so on this i am able to fly nearly every cruiser in the game aside from two tech 3 ships. Which is the minmatar and amarr one.

I started out on this char when i began playing and went all over the place, then about a year in i set my mind and trained perfect multiracial logistics. And since then i´ve continued on the cruiser path with full t2 weapons up to cruiser size across the board. Except for small missiles.

On another character i got i have trained him dedicately towards the naglfar with perfected skills. That account is inactive atm, but when i reactivate it i will resume that plan.

I used to train skills to be able to fly certain ships and I would only start flying those ships when my skills are close to maximum. I used to put skill training before fun. I recommend you don't make the same mistake. Just fly what you want to fly, as soon as you can and train support skills or beneficial skills while you already have fun with the ships. In the same way, it's stupid to wait for PVP until you have all the skills trained. Just get your feet wet and train what you really need to improve.

Nowadays I have pretty much perfect subcap and support skills so I can focus on any gaps or perfectionize for ships that I actively use at that time.

PS: I the beginning, it's almost never worth training something to V. Only do it, if you are sure to get some benefit of it or it's a requirement for something you want.

Well said, i´ve specialized in the class i have because i find them the most versatile and fun, the only t2 large systems i have trained atm is hybrids, mostly out of nescessity because of some nullsec adventures. Other than that i myself have only trained for ships that i think could be fun to play.

That i´m a perfectionist is a different matter, but that rarely prevents me from flying a ship unless i miss a really critcal skill to fill that ships role.

As for newer players, find what you think is fun, Nullsec can be tricky tho because of the different doctrines. But there´s usually space for everyone in a fleet even if you are just a tackler.

But again to iterate on the point, fly for fun, not for perfect skills.

I just train for what I would like to do ... if I really like doing it I max it out (4/5) ... if not I keep it mediocre and move on. The long term goal is to be able to fly everything BC and lower decently in fleets and solo.

I'm my own NPC alt.

Jack of all trades, mostly.
I tried to focus on two races (Amarr & Minmatar) first, to narrow skill training down a little.
Eventually I picked up the skills for Caldari & Gallente subcaps, too- now it's no longer a matter of skillpoints, but the lack of practical experience in these ships that still make me feel deeply uncomfortable in any hull that is neither golden nor rusty.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

I thought this thread said, "what kind of killer are you," and I was about to start posting my favourite pics of my exploits in my local neighbourhood but I'm glad I re-read the title and abstained. Now you guys won't think I'm weird for getting this thread totally wrong. Let me know if you wanna see em anyway, some of the blood stains take on some really interesting patterns. I just got a phone call from my lawyer and I've been advised to inform you all that no such pictures exist and I should distract you with something we can all relate to so you forget I ever mentioned Mrs Lincoln.

I used to be a jack-of-all-trades, but found it is better to specialise.

Present character, I made a mistake changing the attributes to all memory and some perception which was only good for drone skills. So was messing about in asteroid belts killing rats until I got bored with that and started playing another MMO, logging on to just change drone skills.

After getting just over 3 mill sp in drones I changed (changed at around 3.2 mil sp) the attributes to all intelligence with partial perception as I was starting to get bored with the other MMO. However, would have been better with changing to all intelligence and some memory as I started playing yet another MMO and I'm just logging into change skill yet again.

So today was looking at the skills required before I change attributes again, I estimate another 3.5 months before the change to all perception with the rest in willpower which at that point I'd start to train, ship, missiles and gunnery type skills. Character currently has about 4.3 mil sp.

No industry skills or mining skills being trained, Minmatar/Angel ships and weapons only (except drones) are factored into the long-term plan.

So presently just logging into the game to change skills whilst playing another MMO, which is likely to be the case for awhile yet. Long-term goal, not even really thought about it at this stage other than it will be combat focused.
