Do the skills like Destroyer, Mimnitar Frigate, Mimnitar Cruiser etc... give bonuses to piloting or are they only used for qualifying to pilot specific ships?

I am asking because I pilot a Thrasher primarily and have no desire to train up for a Saber. Should I keep training Destroyer to level 5?

All the world's a stage and all the men and women are the players.

Thrasher:

Destroyer Skill Bonus:
10% bonus to Small Projectile Turret tracking speed per level
5% bonus to Small Projectile Turret damage per level

edit
(and if you like thrashers: Sabres are AWESOME)

Every ship lists its bonuses and the skill(s) needed to get them. They are separate from the prerequisites. In the case of the Thrasher, the bonuses read:

Quote:
Destroyer Skill Bonus: 10% bonus to Small Projectile Turret tracking speed and 5% bonus to Small Projectile Turret damage per level

So for every level of Destroyer, you get 10% additional tracking and damage on small projectile turrets. Whether this is worth the time of training to 5 (so going from a 40% tracking speed bonus and a 20% damage bonus at 4 to a 50% tracking speed bonus and a 25% damage bonus at 5) is up to you.

Personally? If you really like the Thrasher, I'd say do it. It's going to be even better next week without the RoF penalty.

Edit: just had a look at your skills. Take Destroyers to 4 for sure and get Small Autocannon Specialization asap in order to maximize your versatility. Then you can start debating whether to take Destroyers or Minmatar Frigate to 5 first (or whether to just bump up to BCs at that point).

as an addition to above answers I would say you should get familiar with evemon which helps a lot when in doubt what skill can be useful to train. evehq is also great tool which serves similar purpose and additionally has a fitting plugin which evemon lacks.
