PC Setup Advice for Multiboxing

4-core i5 or preferrably 4-core/8-thread i7
AMD graphics card (R9 series maybe) due to better multitasking
16 gigs of ram
SSD big neough for the clients, 256gig should be good enough and be below $200. Make sure it's a MLC drive, not TLC.
Proper power supply, preferrably Seasonic or Corsair A/H/T series.

You're looking at about $1200 in total for those, then grab a few 1080p monitors from Benq, roughly $139 each. Spend rest on a hard drive, Schiit magni+modi and proper headphones (not gaming).

Adjust retailers to your preferred, especially if you need it built for you. Choose case based on looks. This setup will be extremely good for years to come.

EVERYONE!

Thanks for help!

You all helped in opening my eyes to different things :)

I ended up going a bit higher than needed setup, which will also help me in playing other games than eve (THERES OTHER GAMES THAN EVE?)

My system:

Gigabyte mobo that a friend upgraded out of, not sure of the specs
AMD 3.0Ghz quad core proc
8 GB (2x4GB) RAM
Nvidia 640 GT 4GB video piped to a single 30" 2560x1600 monitor
60GB SSD OS drive.
320GB WD Caviar green storage drive
Naturally cooled in a steel antec tower I've been recycling since 2002.

This setup, minus monitor, cost me less than US$500. It runs 5 clients on low graphics and one client on medium graphics with no system lag. Then again, I'm seriously restrictive on what processes get to run and when they run, yay hidden system administrator tools.

I am sorry to do this but you said 'good components' and you post an Asus board.

Use a Gigabyte instead, seriously!

The support from Asus is bad. Gigabyte has much better support and I haz connections to Taipeh directly Cool.

You also posted some G-somewhat RAMs and I would go Kingston HyperX instead, those even like overclocking with life long warranty!

Harddrives I would prefer Seagate but they don't have SSD drives as far as I know.

If you want a good SSD, do not use Samsung, use Intel / Kingston and maybe OCZ.

Also keep in mind that you will need an appropiate power supply. This I cannot stress enough. It is one of the most important components of your rig.

And if you have somewhere at the range of 60$ US, go by and APC surge protector, for lightning protection. You won't be sorry.

is the evga 1000w not a good power supply? I tried to do some readings on reviews and such and it seemed to do well.
the reason i went with the samsung is also due to good reviews from multiple websites so i was willing to give it a shot.
ill look into those kingston rams, that life long warrenty is good.
I know asus does not have best support, but out of all the computer products ive used asus is the one brand that hasnt given me a failure yet so im going to try and stick with it.
and I already have that surge apc protector, its a good investment :))

Im running 2xEVE, Diablo 3, WoW same time
Also have Visual Studio, Photoshop and some apps runing
No lag or spike

It is a good power supply, albeit imo overpriced, but it's ridicoulously oversized for your rig. With a single graphic card and a modern cpu 600w will already be more than enough

1) Gigabyte and ASUS have the same return rates in europe and USA, less than 3 units difference last month.

2) Life-long warranty is less than 3 years in most cases, the first instance you replace the motherboard the memory warranty seizes as it's not the same computer anymore. It's not your lifetime, it's the lifetime of the memory you originally installed.

3) All commecrcial mechanicals are awful, all enterprise mechanicals are awesome, no need ot be brand loyal.

4) Samsung has higher MTBF (not a few percent, talking multiples here) compared to every other SSD manufacturer outside of Intel. You cannot buy better than Samsung Pro or high-end Intel drives.

5) Surge protection is godlike, I agree.

It's a good pwoer supply, except you're paying too much for the power. Unless you are going to run 3x of those graphics cards, stay on a 550-600 watt Seasonic (highest quality commercially available). Keep the samsung and on the memory just buy whatever has 3 years or more of warranty, makes no difference. Asus is as good as other brands, people are just thick when they don't have wholesale/importer figures for warranty and failure rates.

You can run 6 clients very well on a 6 year old system....


Just make sure to have at least 8 gb of ram because 4 GB is rough going.



I've had awful luck with seagate over the last 25 years. THe last seagate drive I bought bricked itself and the last seagate drive I used in a build went bad after a few months.



Asus ASrock Gigabyte MSI all produce good quality boards and all have roughly the same level of customer support. There are aberrations when dealing with each company.

I've used Kingston Gskill Crucial Patriot Corsair all which have worked fine. THe only ram I've had issue with was a cheap pair of Patriot RAM and newegg replaced them quickly.

I have a preference for Gskill but that's because they tend to be cheaper for the quality.


Most PSUs are made by OEMS makers like Seasonic delta foxxconn etc. The brand names you see are usually just labels slapped on top of one of the OEM designs. So in theory every brand could have a good PSU and a bad one depending on what designs they go with for what models.

6 is a lot, at least with 4 you shouldn't be disappointed. My system was bought in September 08 and does that, wasn't a highend system at thta date. Anyway I would suggest buying 2 of those cheap 5+ year boxes, maybe put in a decent graphicscrad and run 3 on both. It's not so much about what the computer can actually handel it's more some kind of failproof so chances you get hit hard by Murphys law are lowered by half.

If you have a budget for high end, it's better to buy 2 mid grade PC over those 8 years than 1 high grade one. It's sad but still true.

Personally I would have run a AMD setup but nothing wrong and actually a nice setup ASUS regardless of what has been said here are great boards and yes the EVGA power supply will do just fine and for your first build you did good at least you didn't use a AMD video card with a intel processor you matched everything well and left room for improvement down the road so nothing wrong with the build at all

The best thing you could get is multiple monitors when multi boxing. For the longest time I only used 1 and it was ok, all windowed etc. then I upgraded my PC and bought another monitor. I cannot see myself going back to just one.

or if you multibox and could share your proven setup I would appreciate too :D


I feel bad for you. The 5th gen Intel processor comes out summer 2015.
