I recall something about WoW purple gear, a scam and possibly someone getting stabbed over it.

If I'm remembering the same case, wasn't the crime mainly that the guy stabbed someone?

The only thing we gamble with in Iceland is our lives... by living on a big volcanic rock in the middle of the ocean, thousands of miles from help.

You forgot about gambling that the rotten shark fin isn't going to give you a case of the galloping trots.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The only food that'll kill you if it's not rotten *enough*

In the sense of "biting back"?

xD

Every atom in our bodies was forged in the furnace of ancient stars - it's time we return home.

We can only wish that were the reason.

Hakarl is made from Greenland Shark meat that's been left to rot.

From Wikipedia's entry on Greenland Shark:
"This species of the shark holds the world record for having the most toxic meat of any shark."

The processing (pressing and rotting) of the shark removes the poisonous urea and triethylamine oxide and leaves it "safe" to eat.

Gordon Ramsay can't keep it down

I seem to recall seeing some shady bars in Iceland with slot machines, but my favorite pastime was the big wheel in the Celtic Cross or English Pub.
