as a complete noob to eve and still in the early stages of the game, i am looking for advice on a good genric weapon to use on my boats, at the moment i am favouring missiles, however i have no idea if this is practical or not. In my opinion it works for me at the moment, target, fire a few missiles, next target.
would i be better off mixing weapons? if so then what should i aim to use. i am a PVE player.

many thanks
chili

PVE-wise; You can't really go wrong with missiles.

I can tell you that in my experience turret skills come into play alot more once you want to join fleets etc if only because there are so many turret based ships about.

The support skills for weapon systems are rather generic in their class:

gunnery support skills such as the ones that improve tracking, optimal range, falloff, rate of fire, and others affect lasers, projectiles, and hybrid turrets.

The missile support skills apply to rockets and missile launchers.

That aside, there are some ships which like both ( merlin, tristan, to an extent the rifter ) so getting support skills up for both in the long run won't cripple you.

You still will only want to mix weapon systems on a single ship only if you have to.

The thinking behind this is that performance ( damage , tracking, range ) mods that affect one type of weapon system will affect all your weapons as opposed to only half, like the poor merlin.

If your going to be doing PVE for a time to come and not looking into PVP any time soon, stick with your missiles.

* Missiles really need their support skills in line to shine in PVP.

If you are looking to dive into PVP ( especially in fleets ) your probably better off getting some gunnery under your belt sooner rather than later.

As a general rule you should never mix weapons.

To be more specific, you want your ship geared to fight at a single range, typically this means short range or long range. You maintain a higher level of efficiency by fighting at one range with one weapon type than you do by mixing weapons and ranges. By having a mix of weapons you normally reduce your ability to do concentrated dps to a target and take longer to kill that target. This results in more incoming dps for a longer time and a longer time-to-completion on your mission.

There are some ships that have split weapons hard-points, guns and missiles. The Typhoon comes to mind here. With these you want to aim to fight at the same range. Match short range guns with short range missiles, or long range guns with long range missiles.

Finally, your ship is likely to have a bonus to a particular type of weapon. Use these weapons.

cool thanks for the advice, the reason behind my question was for when npc enemies during missions etc are at an optimum missile range then once attacked they are moving into close proximity, as it goes my missiles are doing ok

ah, that clears it up a bit P

Your missiles will hit for pretty consistent damage anywhere it can reach.

The behaviour of the NPC's is also the hurdle alot of turret users have in that they can get in under guns if you let them.

As an aside, that same behaviour is what allows really really big guns to land solid hits on small frig sized targets. Something you will never get with missiles currently.

If you like missiles and have skills already, and you are happy flying the ship you're in the best advice would be to train missiles to specialisation level before branching. I prefer a more all rounder approach, but for max power in minimum time concentrate your training toward high-tech weapons.

projectiles, & missiles are good and so are drones. all of which can do all damage types
