What will we be using after Imgur?

Does anyone remember Imageshack? it used to be the top website for easily uploading images.

Then it became harder and harder to get to the pure image link itself. Most links the site handed you were ones with adds.

or you get a generous link with forum tags done. Except if you used it then you got an "uploaded on imageshack" banner on the picture.

Then they made you register an account to uploaded images and then they started linking all images to your account even if you opted out of that.

I don't know about the rest of you but I don't really like to see all the images I ever uploaded. Gathered together in a neat collection with my identity bound to them.

But now Imgur are getting pushier about wanting users to register an account. And when you upload a picture they won't give you the image link without a fight

I uploaded a picture as an example

The first link you get is

http://imgur.com/m3CNWNY

Which is the page itself with ads.

if you then click the picture you get to

i.imgur.com/m3CNWNY.png

Which is another useless link.

if you then click the picture and copy the source you get

http://i.imgur.com/m3CNWNY.png

Which is now finally the link to the image that you wanted from the start

Gradually Imgur is going further away from the user friendly simple service that we came to it for.

So when it finally goes off the deep end and requires you to login with your facebook account and automatically uploads to facebook and +likes every single picture you upload. What will we be using then?

No they aren't. The second link is the url you get if you click the uploaded image. When you go to the page that contains only the image. It's a second layer of the website without still being the image itself.

Imgur works perfectly fine for me, same as always. Maybe this is a regional thing?

But to answer your question: should imgur really **** it up, I expect a new image hosting site like this to come up quickly.
The demand for a simple, no-bullshit image host is just too big, the market will regulate itself should imgur feel like comitting suicide.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

Ad block ftw

But as Sol said. Dropbox is still great. Just the URLs that are painful long.

Uhm.. yes, they are. They are exactly the same, only the third one explicitely states the "http://" part, which your browser adds on its own anyway if you don't enter it explicitely, like in the second link.
I get the same result whether I enter the second or third link in my browser.

Idk what you're up to, imgur works the same for me that it always has.

I'm curious how you get to that "second link" anyway.
When I visit your first link and right-click the picture to "copy link location", I get that third link, including http://
When I left-click the picture in the first link to go to the picture, then copy the URL from the browser address bar, I get the link including http:// as well.

I mean, I agree with you that simple image hosting without need of an account and the possibility to easily link to the plain image is something nice (just not very profitable when it's offered for free, I guess).

But I don't see the difficulties with imgur you are talking about, in that regard.

It's still usable but since its conception. Imgur is gradually moving away from what made it so liked in the first place.

People come for Imgur for the flat uncomplicated image url but they do everything in their power to put it further and further out of reach

Uhm... how do sites like Imgur, et al. make money in order to stay in business? Or to put it another way, how can they afford to provide you with free hosting?

Plan B would be to create a throwaway hotmail/gmail account and use the free cloud file storage space they offer. But that still has the same long term problem.
