well Eve is just miles ahead of SWTOR.

Although I find the graphics and character customization lacking in TOR, the above statement is kind of cruel. No game comes close to EVE's character customization, no matter how much we whine about how it was a waste of time.

I'm back after the Beta Weekend Test of SWTOR, a bit tired and sore but in a good way. Smile
Was gonna try write some kind of long review but instead I bring alot of screenshots that say more than a thousand words. Besides there are alot of reviews already out there.

WOW in space. No thank you.

I have to agree that a few parts of the UI and some of the game mechanics reminds of Wow but that's a good thing, SWTOR have some of the good stuff that Wow have and then some.

The graphics could be better and is gonna be alot better at release apparently, the beta version doesn't have any anti aliasing enabled etc.

So here is a bunch of links to screenshots, hope you enjoy.

ImageShack Album: SWTOR Beta Weekend Test Images: 100

All images have been altered to some extent, and the graphics is not as good as it will be at release.

It seems that you might not be in denial about this game not being as great as you had hoped. And attempting to convince the rest of us it is good, and not the same ole same ole that has been thrown at us for the last 6 years.

I dont think it's a bad game (hasn't been released so can't fully judge), but there's revolutionary about it, or even all that evolutionary about it. This style of 3 person button mash, grind, 0 skill has lost the allure for me, and many others.
For me that means I've already played it/done it. So that makes it a not great game.

The truth is that I didn't think I'd be surprised, but were and had a few of those "whoa!" moments.
I'm not trying to convince anyone really I just wanted to share my experience with you guys, with a crapton of screenshots. Big smile

Uh... WoW ripoff much? I saw at least a dozen features on the UI that were blatantly ripped off from WoW. And I know they can do better for graphics.

IT HAS BUTTONS, WOW HAS BUTTONS! CONSPIRACY!!!

But yeah, its an action adventure MMO, like the majority of them on the market.

Wow, they managed to make it look worse than KOTOR-1. Go figure.

KOTOR 1 Is still a pretty game... though getting it to run well on a modern PC is anything but easy...

Yeah, graphics look like crap, even if they add AA, it's going to look like crap.

Same ole theme park mechanics with a star wars name and look. Space combat is on rails from my understanding. Kudos if thats your thing, but dont expect new, unique or innovation. Voice acting doesnt count either. For some reason thats the first thing people mention.

What, people aren't allowed to enjoy simple mechanics from time to time? Its better than WoW...

WoW has kung-fu pandas, so it's clearly the superior product.

Obviously, everyone knows that pandas make a game better, right?

HEY CCP, WHY DON'T WE HAVE PANDA SHIPS?!

I know right, but why stop there! Add them as a fifth race to EVE. I bet that would attract millions of players from WoW and possibly even SWTOR, if CCP chooses the design I have here. This new panda race would fit EVE or any scifi game like a glove. This would be a fitting model for their ships and as a bonus it looks like it could have been made by the CCP guy who designed the new scorpion, so it is a totally realistic option. Naturally they would have to have their own CQ and units for DUST.

Looks totally awesome right?

Ill have you know Pandarians are an old, noble race in Warcraft lore. I was always the Brewmaster Hero in WC3 long long before WOW ****** my favorite lore up - nice to see its coming back.

TOR graphics in the Thanksgiving weekend beta were a lot worse than previously, so I'd reserve final judgment until the game is out (early access starts in two weeks). Apparently they distributed the build without hi-res textures and there were some settings problems, too (and obviously AA-ing was fubared). Having played in the beta weekend, I can say that the graphics style is very well done and fits the game nicely.

There is nothing revolutionary about the game... it's your everyday themepark MMO with WoW/EQ mechanics and lightsabers and a BioWare story. Many features are nicely streamlined, like auto-loot, item customization, companions, and crew skills. Space combat is of course an arcade minigame on rails, they said as much from day one. You can upgrade the items of your ship and your companions. The voice-acted story manages to draw you in and care much more about your character. Also, zapping people with force lightning does not get old, whether it's in a torture cutscene or out on the field.

It's not breaking any records but it's a solid game that's shaping up to be the most serious contender to WoW's themepark throne yet. They have something like 1.5 to 2 million pre-orders to date if you count Europe as well, although it remains to be seen how many will stick around. I'll surely draw ire for this but I plan on playing both EVE and TOR for now. They are entirely different experiences, and I like both.

The problem is not only that the spaceship combat is a revival of the old tunnel shooter, but the MMO part as well. Yes you can make good or evil choices but they have no overall consequences to the story: Spare a guy or kill him, regardless of your choice he is gone from the game and does not appear again.

Also the spaceship mini-game brought the final decision that I will certainly not purchase SWTOR. In all honesty it is overhyped and not even a contender for WoW. People are likely to play it for a month or two, then they have seen most of it.

SWTOR would be great, if they had made it a single-player by removing the grind.

....as if 10,058 Goon voices cried out and were suddenly silenced.

They ended all the beta testing the other day and now everyone are just waiting for the pre-launch/launch.

It seems I can barely post without linking something, besides my crappy screenshots didn't make it justice.
So for those interested here are a few links to some of the game content on YouTube:

The way I see it, SWTOR is Knights of the old republic 3 and after the story/single player the game is useless and one can unsub, expensive SP game that would be better if it was singleplayer only. If anyone thinks the pve/raid will be any better than wow you are fooling yourself, I don't blame you but it is fact and pvp will not even be close to eve, so the game is somewhere in between wow and eve... again, don't waste money on collectors editions and long subscription plans, do yourself a favor and sub for a month or 2 to finish the story/stories and quit. Take it for what it is, KOTOR 3!

SWG pre NGE was a better game when it comes to everything but the story/sp/questing.

I however will wait until it fails and go FTP within the year and enjoy the KOTOR 3 then :) for free!

Basically, the way I see SW:TOR is like six parallel small KOTOR sequels with worse graphics and a much smaller scope wrapped into and followed by a sci-fi WoW clone.

Not necessarily a bad deal, especially to die-hard fans of SW or sci-fi in general that only didn't bother with WoW because it was neither. But for everybody else, a resounding "meh".
