Sorry mate, bad wording obviously. I'd think that empathy, an artistic or poetic temperament, or a philosophical/seeking mentality-- all of those tend to be closely linked to what we in modern terms call clinical depression. In ancient Egypt, Sumeria or India, or modern Tibet, the priests might acknowledge that kid and come take him/her into the priesthood.

Same with Native American tradition, which has managed to somehow preserve itself intact and more than healthy, into our time. It's a link to the way original human societies would have thought. In the Lakota language, a person who is empathetic, or somehow deeper or more sensitive, is probably more on the wakan ('Spirit') side. That kid might choose to devote himself/herself to learning as much as possible about the wakan side, and incidentally passing the insights on to the community. That would be what we call being a shaman. It's a universal tradition of all cultures, but the traditions and ways of doing things are different, depending on the local culture.

Contrast that with Western reductionist philosophy, which has its roots in Renee Descartes. Not a bad guy, but egad, that was about 300 years ago, and he was bringing things forward from 400 years ago. (Before there was a steam engine, no less). the approach of Western science (including medical/psychological science) is that everything can be reduced into discrete components. "After a careful 5 minute evaluation, and based on your responses to my rote questions-- I hereby diagnose you as clinical depressive. Nice to meet you, good-bye, please give this piece of paper to the receptionist/billing clerk, who will phone in your prescription or something. It was very nice to meet you [on the next person waiting in a room, and what might his/her problem be, while I'm walking down the hall?]."

Maybe the best thing is realize one has what's called depression, recognize it, and think about it in the terms that our ancestors would have. You may have a harder row to hoe than most, but you may also have more insights to share than most. Somehow, that's the path you chose. Smile

religious work was a pretty great way of employing the people who couldn't fit into the typical societal structure. depressed? time to put that sensitive spirit to work relieving the spiritual troubles of the rest of the community. psychotic? that's just lots of spirit magic going on, no problem. gay? well, there's nothing wrong with that, it probably means that you've got some crazy spirit magic going on too. just have a hard time socializing with people? go seclude yourself in a cave and receive holy wisdom, all you'll have to worry about is the occasional person dropping by to give you lots of cool stuff in exchange for some herbs and chanting

it'd be pretty cool if america could train the mentally ill in shamanism instead of throwing them in prison or letting them die on the streets

It depresses me that:

Everyone who is blue is depressed
Everyone who is energetic has ADD
Everyone who is ambitious is narcisistic

Blame the the rise of the Psychologist, the DSM V and it's pharmaceutical sponsors: everyone is sick, but luckily we have pills for everything!

As a Psychologist I think I have to speak a bit here for my colleagues, including me.

There is a HUGE misconception on Psychology and the Pharma aspect of it, because, believe it or not, only VERY few (almost a tiny % of Psychologists can ACTUALLY PRESCRIBE medication and then very select ones, and then only in the USA that I know of).

In LatinAmerica, any Psychologist prescribing meds, to my knowledge is not only acting illegally but can actually be accused of murder if the person dies of any kind of cause not cleared by a Coroner/Police/Etc.

See, PSYCHIATRISTS , being MD´s with knowledge of the biochemistry of the human body and by law can PRESCRIBE medication of several sorts, some of them even needing besides the Psychiatrist´s regulated Federation Number, several other permits that vary by state.

If you want to blame anyone, in this gross over generalization, is the MEDIA, The Big Pharma conglomerates, heck , blame Magazines and TV Advertising that promise you bliss just by taking a magical pill that will make everything go away (regardless of the real effect it has) , and in this I am grossly generalizing like you , and I end up being in the same bus as you, which I want out for the sake of the argument I want to explain here.

I believe this thread is interesting and brings a lot of good topics on this Illness of the Mind, but your reply sir is not only misleading, but actually dis information

There is no rise of the Psychologist and the DSM, the DSM has been going on for quite a while ( same with the CIE which is its brother from the other side of the Pond), the fact modern age and the Internet gives information quickly to almost anyone able to type, only makes that, information more quickly available, and easier to be understood (sometimes poorly) by more people.

So back to your assertion, No sir, That is totally false, depression is not rising because because people study Psychology, the DSM is more open to the public and/or Pharma conglomerates are making more new pills to treat all kinds of ailments and subsequently they get more promotion in the Media because they discover new chemical compounds.

Depression exists globally due to an extremely wide set of variables that would take (and is taking) thousands of researchers to understand and explain, treat and try to cure or contain, from all fields of study.

If you want to bash a subset of mental health professionals, on which I am included by default, I´d rather hear your dissertation on sophism and how Modern Psychology is a new form for it, for example, or please explain how Modern Shamanism is superior to modern Psychotherapy techniques and how drugs of all sorts in nature can cure better than Modern Medicaments, that Sir, would be more entertaining, but bashing us for the sake of bashing us is ... a bit "unsportsmanlike". Big smile

I write this with a cool and calm demeanor, I am not implying animosity towards you (have to write this to be clear, since a lot is lost in text and I like to THINK some people here already know my humor, but perhaps I am alone in this so better to write the much needed emotional context to try not to antagonize you) and write this with candor in my mind and a very real need to un-muddy some of the waters of your comment, not really wishing to debate either, just add my point here and perhaps enlighten you and others, and you are free to take it or leave it, but just reading me is enough, since I just want to share this.

Hoping you have a nice day I now say goodbye

Cheers!
