More than enough tank to pop the triggers in little baby steps, which raises mission completion times significantly. You want to pop every trigger, shoot the small stuff, and kill the battleships as they burn in. That's the difference between paper DPS and practical application.

I don't fly against angels all that often, so I don't really end up with issues like that. Also I'm probably a bit too used to the insanity that is the paladin now. When I do fight Angels I tend to use my mach and burn right at them and I'm pretty sure that has less tank than a bastioned medium booster vargur. Also if you are killing them as they burn, well they aren't doing full damage either.

My 2isk....

This is a game. If it makes you happy to fly a Golem, awesome. Fly one. If using a pirate BS gets you excited, more power to you. In the end, it does not matter. I am not a min/max gamer. I play Eve to have fun. I have done lvl 4's in just about everything, including an Ishkur. Done the 1, 2 and 3 separate accounts at one time. I don't play Eve to learn how to use a stopwatch and Excel.

Fly what makes you happy. If someone else flies something else, cool, hopefully it is because it is what they like. Not because someone on an internet forum told them what to do...

OP has most likely settled on his choice long ago, but I looked into this a bit for my alt. Been away for a few years and would like for Gal/Min to stop shooting at her in hisec, gonna mission for SoE then Gal to get that fixed. I'm gonna "noobtank" so I can walk away from the comp or focus on my main at any time, i.e. permarep 1k+ tank. Gankfit will do more damage but the pecking order should stay the same. This ridiculous Bastion module they added seems to let me megatank without losing too many slots or wasting too much money (five slots on Pally, lol, with 90+100km scorch, lulul what powercreep... Also Blasters are now viable, \o/ so I eft'd setups for each Marauder with 3xDmg, RofRig, 2xTC, and gave the Vargur an extra TE because it seems the weakest. She can't do missiles so Golem isn't really an option, plus it's more microheavy what with painters and all, have to press FOUR buttons(!), and also count volleys or waste ammo, and lug around 12 types of ammo etc. Vs bs targets it'll always do the most damage though, and oh don't we like those pretty eft numbers...Smile

I got these "averaged" or whatever rat resists from another thread here, dunno how accurate, whatcha guys think, resists look ok?

blood": resists = [0.275, 0.365, 0.455, 0.545]
sansha": resists = [0.29, 0.375, 0.465, 0.555]
serpentis": resists = [0.45, 0.365, 0.28, 0.54]
drone": resists = [0.31, 0.38, 0.465, 0.55]

Plugged them into a simple spreadsheet anyway, only vsBS dmg shown i.e. negligible loss to tracking up close. Used a Mega as target, 380sig, 153m/s as target which is too fat & slow compared to Angels BS but that also gives a tiny advantage advantage to the Vargur since Blaster tracking is better then AC, and twice that of Megapulse.

Yes this chart is ugly, sorry about that. On the left is dmg numbers for each ammo for respective Marauder with above mentioned fit, on the right is color coded max at each range. Green is good.

If I add up all the best numbers including blood which didn't fit above (same as Sansha, Kron/Varg get slightly higher numbers) and use the same horrid conditional formatting I discovered excel had yesterday, I get this http://eve-files.com/dl/270337

Which makes me think that she's going to be flying about in a Kronos and not a Vargur. Would be Pally for Amarr space no doubt, if you have Amarr BS 5.


-TL/DR
Kronos > Vargur, based on NPC resists semi selectable dmg ain't all it's cracked up to be.
Vargur slightly better at longer ranges though, 40-70km, but IMO not enough to matter what with MJD or MWD's using barely any cap.
