I think I'm being misread here. People in this thread are using the term "game" as though it equals "no emotional cost, whatever you do." I disagree with that: I think Eve is designed in such a way that that particular definition of "game" doesn't apply here (and isn't meant to: that's what I meant by referring to CCP's stated intent to create a game more meaningful than RL).

How a game is designed means nothing. Whether of not an activity has an 'emotional cost' is in the hands of the player regardless of what levers a game maker decides to push ((and as i said during the Erotica1 affair, if a person is somehow overly susceptible to those particular levers being pushed they shouldn't be playing MMOs in the 1st place). EVE is just a game no matter what anyone thinks, it's not like my alliance invading Delve is going to bring peace in the middle east lol.

New Eden is fictitious, but the relationships we strike up with others are real. That's why we invest in them. Or are you going to tell me that, since soccer is "just a game", your team meant nothing to you, and stepping down was no more difficult a decision than walking away from a game of monopoly?

That's exactly what I'm telling you. All of my teammates were public safety employees (Police, Fire EMS) like me, they know the difference between real life and just for fun. That doesn't mean we aren't all still friends, but our friendship comes from working together in REAL life, not the outcome of some soccer game.

You're doing a bit of projecting here, imagining that other people would feel the same way you do, when that just isn't the case. I like my EVE buddies and have met a few in real life, but that doesn't change the fact that we are playing a game that in the grand scheme of mortal existance is largely irrelevant.

This is why i say to the OP that if he isn't having fun he should make changes rather than agonizing about it. I'm still friends with people in "enemy" corps and alliances to this day, many of whom are invited to my private channel. Friendship is not reason to be miserable in a video game.

Maybe it was, but this clearly isn't for the OP, and I'm arguing that that's entirely ok and understandable. This is not a case where HTFU applies. Other people have made more helpful suggestions.

This is exactly where the HTFU concept applies, because by making this thread the OP is demonstrating that the like (of proper context regarding this game) is a bit blurry for him. It shouldn't be, EVE is a game, have fun.

(I'm reminded about the DEV who talked about getting all his stuff stolen from his corp by a personal friend and how they laugh about it to this day, THAT is keeping EVE in proper context, I'm sure someone else will remember that DEV video).
