CPU Going Nuts / Dead RAM

Edit: Title + Dead Ram
So after many shenanigans and trial and error, I have found that one of the 4 RAM slots on my motherboard is dead. Of course I only figured this out after ordering 2 more sticks to bring my RAM up to 16g.. however now I seem to have more of a conundrum.

So..
Replace motherboard?
Bring to comp shop?

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+
RAM: Corsair 4x4gig (only 12/16 working)
Windows 7 64 Bit
Tower
8-core processor
Video Card: EVGA 760

If I was to replace the motherboard, would this be an ideal time to get a few more slots for RAM or a general motherboard upgrade? I don't want to spend more then $100-$150 if I can help it.. I assume that buying a new motherboard will be cheaper then bringing it to the shop(?)

I've already done tons of troubleshooting.. the only thing left is to take out the processor and check pins/clean.. but waiting for some new compound to get here before I mess with that. During my noob attempts to fix my computer myself I may have messed up the motherboard myself.. more then possible.

Yes, the fan is still loud.. but I assume that re-applying the heat sink w/ new paste + 12gigs more RAM will help that..

Plz halp! Thanks in advance :)

Sure it is not your GPU? Also CPU at 25% doesn't mean much nowadays with multi cores. It could e.g. mean 1 of your 4 cores is actually running at 100%.

It can be a number of things. You might not have the right power input to your CPU fan, for example.

Is this a recent thing, or has it always done that?

basically always done it, it's an 8-core processor, and brand new graphics card, but the other one was quiet also (I used a pen top to see which fan it was by stopping it for a moment) the whole rig is Digital Storm and was set up to work well together, it's just that 1 fan that freaks out in over-drive.

It does have a huge heat sink on the CPU, and the fan is attached to that. I would think the fact that it isn't running full-blast and it has the nice heat sink would mean it would run cool and fan would stay lower

Run a torture test and check your temperatures. If it's running hot, make sure your case isn't in an enclosed space or clogged with dust. After that I might try reapplying your thermal compound and reseating the cooler. Get the easy stuff outta the way first.

Ok, cool. ordered some paste remover and new paste.. that may be the issue, as it's been a while since I bought it and I've moved and stuff.. I hope so anyway

Set affinity of exefile to one real processor each.

Tell me if it helped.

ok, Looking at task manager, only 4gigs of my 8gigs of ram are being used, and they are being run ragged at around 90%.. I've ordered more getting here tomorrow, would that make a significant difference? or will it just use the additional 8gigs just as much?

Only need more ram when running multiple clients, and even then, it's more so video ram that you need. I doubt it would make much difference, as ram just increases the amount of things you can run at one time, and does not off-load the work on the CPU.

16 gigs RAM and then we can talk.

Lol.

I haven't looked at how multithreaded the client is, but i get a somewhat nice even load across 3 cores (20%-40%-20%) running a single client. Might be an idea to fiddle with the affinity later when i run 2 clients (if it doesn't crash, crash, crash)

IIRC, i run "cool'n'quiet" settings for the cpu, which seems to make the fan react to load instead of heat. boggles my mind. Fan spins up like crazy when the client crashes.

You can do a lot of neat stuff in the standard windows task manager :)

In the graphics settings there's an option called 'Interval' or something (top left). If it's set to 'Interval immediate' you should try setting it to Interval one (Interval immediate makes your GPU run full tilt all the time).

You haven't posted a temperature yet. Unless your CPU is reading around 80c it's not the thermal paste, it's your fan settings in the BIOS.

Send it to me, I'll assemble it for you!

Hell, because I'm so generous, I'll send you TWO IDENTICAL SETUPS back!

Reseat your RAM, reapply thermal paste and do the thing with your card.

How can you possibly know that without knowing what CPU he is using?

Sure it's not just the fan itself wearing out and the bearings no longer being perfect?
Could be the same speed it's always been and just sounding a lot louder.
