What is with all the OOC Anti-Amarr hate?: Keep IC/OOC separate

I can understand people disliking slavery. I get it(albiet Amarr slavery is somewhat different to what they are often thinking of). IC racism is annoying and a turn off for a lot of Amarr characters, but it's understandable.

However, what I'm talking about is the bleed over to OOC.

See, a lot of people consider me arrogant for making my character a Holder, one with extremely high standards, deep background, and titles. I've actually been threatened OOCly just because these people don't like my rp. IC threats make sense, but OOC? Seriously?

To him(Vulxanis), if he requires you to call him by his proper title(Lord Draconis), that's normal. He also requires himself to address you in the way you find most respectful.

This isn't arrogance, it's cultural sensitivity. Including internal cultural sensitivity.

Now, ICly your character can think it's arrogance. That's fine. That can be due to any number of reasons.

However, apparently a lot of rpers just don't like me OOCly for rping this way.

I do my best to keep OOC separate. Why can't others do the same?

Here's an example of a good separation:

People like Nauplius irk me OOCly because OOC, he likes drama, whereas I don't. He actually likes to incite drama. That's a legit OOC reason not to like someone. Not liking him because he rps a blooder, that's not, however. He's allowed in the Amarr.OOC channel because OOC is separate.

Possibly this OOC hate is jealousy? I have had characters in all 4 factions roleplay channels at one point or another. I have never, and I repeat, never, seen any of the other factions be as organized as the Amarr. It's almost pitiful if I'm honest lol

Amarr rp is fun, even if you're not a holder. Some people like the whole titles thing. Just like some people enjoy games that simulate medieval eras. A lot of Amarr rpers have a fascination with history, including myself, and can connect via that to the amarr.

If you know of someone/have encountered someone who can't keep IC/OOC separate, let me know, and I'll add them to my list. If you want to know if someone is safe to rp with, just ask me before roleplaying with someone. The list isn't public.

So here's a question for the comment section: How can we keep something that's not real(EVE lore) out of our relationships with people in real life?

Talk about it with the person(s) in question. OOC that is and in a civil non antagonising tone.
A long time ago I played D&D (2nd Edition). Not only as a player, but also as a Dungeon Master for 15 years.
Quite a few times I have witnessed people getting irritated irl about the actions or more often words of their fellow players. Occasionally people even got angry. As a GM I stopped the game right there to start a conversation about it. It's a game, it's supposed to be leisurely fun.

One word of advice: Don't start pointing fingers in advance, otherwise a conversation will not help.
You want to play the game in the game together? Then you have to account for the fact that the way others perceive your role playing can be quite different from person to person. And sometimes not at all as you yourself think it looks and feels to others. Off course, vice versa can also be the case.
All that can lead to the conclusion that to be able to play together, one or several have to adjust the way they play even so slightly, just to be able to continue doing so.

I wish you all good luck.

As this post was not locked and I saw no order to discontinue the discussion, I would like to voice my agreement with ISD Ezwal. The tone I was intending to post was frustration, rather than antagonistic. I apologize if that is what came across. Even if that is not what he intended to tell me, I wholeheartedly agree with his explanation.

This.

When I want to get angry at people I either go to work or try to play golf badly.

EVE is for killing pixels, destroying the hopes, plans and ambitions of other players, shirking the duties of housework and child-rearing and general relaxation. Smile

The way I explained it makes it seem that way, but it's really not.

It's a game, it should be fun. Also, haters gonna hate and there's nothing you can do about it.

You're unlikely to change the opinion of someone you only have a text based chat box to interact with, particularly if they start with an irrational position and show no sign of a willingness to consider other possibilities. So just play the game your way, avoid (or at least don't sweat on) those who disrupt your enjoyment of it and have a good time as a result.

You seem to understand this already, of course, so I probably just wasted your time clarifying it for you.

In all honesty, the OOC hate isn't unique to Amarr (albeit they get the biggest part sadly due to two traist they got, slavery & religion)
However, the best way to deal with it is to ignore/report the haters (when they breach rules) and focus on those who do give you a positive experience. Use block function if needed.
When you don't respond to provocations, they usually fall silent pretty soon.

All in all, Vulxanis here is an enjoyable person to chat around with!

@ Ollie You're fine :) Thanks for clarifying it anyway lol I did understand, but others reading this might not.

@ Jandice Well you are too xD I agree. It's just really frustrating since I like making friends and this is a barrier people put up for no reason. But you're right and that's what I do lol

I treat OOC hates as local smack talk.

There exist also a type of RPers who will make OOC drama when they are not treated the way they want to be treated ICly. Like you RP a holder, but suddenly comes along a person that hates the idea you seem superior ICly and start making OOC threat and demand you to stop at once Lol. You know, EVE being EVE where threats/smack talks reign supreme.

I find that it helps to reply ICly to OOC heathens too Lol, "Unenlightened heathens and their gibberish"

People in this day and age just seem to have a natural mistrust of establishments..... in the case of the Amarr you get 3 packed in one bundle.

Religion
Civil Order
Imperial

In the end Amarr are by far the most interesting group not only from an historical sense but also is terms of design and ideology. I have to admit I used to love playing the bad guys in games until I played EVE, now its blue skies, noble proclamations, and Amarr all the way,

Personally, I think a healthy bit of OOC bias adds that little spice of personal investment to the RPG experience. For example, I won't fly Gallente ships on principle. I might eventually train Gallente skills if I wanted to, for example, fly SoE exploration ships, but that's about as far as my OOC hate goes. I have nothing against players who fly or play Gallente, even those who do Faction Warfare. And so far as my IC contributions go, I might give a "FOR THE STATE" at big events, but that's about it. End of the day, all the toys go back in the same box, and it's good to remember that there is a box, and it's all just toys.

I just smile a little more when the Gallente toys break.

Right, but that's against NPCs and pixels. I'm talking full blown resentment or even hate, simply because someone chose a different race than you, or likes to roleplay differently. I'm actually a part of the immersive roleplay community, and letting IC/OOC bleed over is a big no-no, and yet it keeps happening against Amarr players.

I think there is sometimes a misunderstanding when it comes to OOC related chat sometimes players will tell you OOC that they dislike or disagree with your entire RP, this can definitely feel like a personal attack as you like myself and many others have probably put a lot of time and thought into that RP, but it is not always meant that way.

I think I remember reading a quote on a forum once which described the do's/don'ts of making a good RP I personally feel that at the end of the day it still has to be something you enjoy but player reactions both IC and OOC effect that enjoyment the problem with Smart RP as I see it is it is always going to be an up hill climb, mostly because of the points you previously mentioned, I think because you have also chosen to give yourself a position straight away e.g. the holder stuff that also puts you under even more pressure, I'm not saying it's a bad thing just that it is a thing people will notice.

Here is a link to that previously mentioned thread (Don't hate it because a Matari wrote it)

I also will mention here if you treat other people's RP with disdain in IC/OCC they usually do it back, for instance looking down on people even in an IC discussion might cause that player that same feeling OOC I find it best while in IC discussions to have an OOC chat open as well and use the OOC to lighten the mood.

Hope some of this helps *looks up* gosh I went on a bit. Sorry

That's not neccesarily an OOC bias. What you choose to fly (or not) can be an entirely in-character decision; for instance, PIE Inc. only flies Amarr hulls to show their dedication to the Amarr Empire.

Bury your feelings deep down, Vulxanis. They do you credit, but they could be made to serve the bikie gang at the pub.

And thank your impotent God that you can play an EVE character that give you a reasonable level of anonymity.

I actually like that link lol idc who wrote it :P It's got some good stuff in there. I think I'll bookmark it.

And it's hard not to take "I don't have a lot of respect for people who roleplay the way you do. It pisses me off." as a personal insult.

And as far as I'm concerned, that person could rp a sansha or a blooder. Idc OOC. There are actually Sansha and Blood Raider rpers I actually like OOC. IC my character would spill their guts in the most painful way imaginable. OOC, I'm happy to hear from them lol So it's not like I don't try to practice what I preach.

In every RP setting I've been part of, especially EVE's, there seems to be a large group of people who don't know where the line is between IC and OOC and some who don't distinguish any difference at all.

IC, I expect some insulting comments to be directed at Frederick. While he is a good person, he often sticks his nose in places he doesn't belong or try to expose "the truth" to increase viewership of his comedy-news program. He acts like an annoying journalist because that's part of his character.

OOC, I sometimes get nasty comments. No direct threats or anything like that. But often people think Fred acts the same way I do. In some way's he does, I can be an argumentative person. But anyone who knows me can tell there is a clear difference between my character, and me.

I think the problem stems from people diving into roleplay without really knowing what it is. It's great to have people willing to jump into it, but sometimes it gets out of hand.

Watch_ Fred Fred Frederation_ and stop cryptozoologist! Fight against the brutal genocide of fictional creatures across New Eden! Is that a metaphor? Probably not, but the fru-fru- people will sure love it!

I certainly face that issue attempting to keep the Dust forums RP alive..... people just don't seem to be able to separate IC and OOC, often time I get accused of some kind of archaic pro-slavery racism, I've spent more hours than I can count attempting to explain to these people the differences between my characters views as shaped by Amarrian culture vs my OOC views and opinions as shaped by my own culture.

Also I have found people have made assumptions about my personality based on my IC views...... its hilarious when they actually get to know me and find I have more fun chatting about the game than preaching, and giggling as I roll over people in a tank.

Thats not to say I don't enjoy labeling people as heretics and apostates.

Lol I can totally relate. Having to explain to people that my character's views on slavery is an extension of my doing my best to make an IC situation somewhat less horrible. A lot of people don't get that. Plus,it's just a game, people.
