Do none of you have pet insurance?

Can't speak for anyone else, but in my case insurance was denied by every provider I applied to because of.. you guessed it.. epilepsy being a preexisting condition.

Two of the providers even commented that my cat's head injury was also a preexisting condition which they would use as a basis to deny me an insurance policy.

Well I don't care and I still love him P

The breaking point...ah yes. For you it's most likely money. For the cat, quality of life.

My 22 year old Siamese cost over $15,000 in vet bills over his long life. And he was a loud, demanding pain in the but.

And I miss him every day.

Best $15,000 I ever spent.

No, he just kinda sits there and drools now.

A little trust goes a long way. The less you use, the further you'll go.

No pets here. Primarily due to the fact that they are just too expensive, even if the pet has only minor issues. Plenty of friends have pets for me to get my fix on Big smile Granted, if I had plenty of expendable income a pet or two would be some of the first add ons though. At which point I figure different pets would have different monetary thresholds and there is nothig wrong with that in my opinion.

Lol, looks like he's looking at the screen strategising... "hmmm! I would move those units on the left more to the right..."

Just in response to the "lining the vet's pockets" type comments, I used to be a vet, and at least in my part of the world vets are one of the most underpaid professions of all (words straight out of the mouth of an income protection insurance person). I am currently retraining to be a teacher, and my beginning salary as a teacher with be much higher than what I ever made as a vet.

Oh, and pet insurance is a great idea in my opinion.

I will never, ever, EVER own another Labrador Retriever. Best dogs in the world, but their entire reason for existing seems to be to put veterinarian's kids through college. Just poured over 3k into my Yellow Lab to repair her ACL..... and this is the second time around with her! Grrrr.

You got the TPLO surgery too, huh? My yellow lab Marduk just had the TPLO surgery done, but it was only like 700 euros or so, and done by a specialist. It happens, but 3k is ridiculous. Don't give up on the lab, you just have to pay lots of attention to their activities.

I use mine to retrieve for fun, not hunting. I grew up around labs and we used them for duck hunting, but since I haven't hunted in decades, I just train him to retrieve things for fun. About a year and a half ago I started teaching him how to snag a frisbee out of the air, and I think the impact of him landing on his hind legs accelerated his ACL problem. Because of this I don't toss the frisbee to him anymore. He's fine now, but if I work him really hard I have to give him a couple of days' rest so he can heal up. They're just like you and I; after playing football in high school, weren't you really, REALLY sore the next morning? Same with dogs.

The good thing is labs are extremely tough, so you don't have to be as gentle with them as you would another dog. They can take it as long as they get enough rest. Don't give up on the lab! They're the best!
