Hypothetical questions here:

If you acquire a large enough alliance, how would one go about taking control of a system, and claiming sovereignty on it? Are there any systems still unclaimed?

HED-GP is temporarliy open. I was mining there last night as it was unclaimed. If you hurry and set up a few POS there you can claim it. That being said - they don't last long. You need to hurry if you aim to just claim it. Once claimed - you have to lay down sov blockade units and do some other stuff. Best to nab the quick one.

I'm sure there are others, but HED is next to empire and is a great choice as a starter system to claim.

I think the people interested in this thread would appreciate it if Goonswarm or PL/N3 posted a link to their Null Sec rental ads.

Not for many years.

Basically, to take sov you would need to destroy the sov structures anchored in the system by the current owners and then deploy your own. But in order to have a reasonable chance of doing this, and actually holding the system for any significant time, you would need to assemble thousands of pilots. The last new sov holding group that took its territory by force was the HERO coalition, a group of alliances numbering about 15,000 pilots. And they were only able to do so with the consent of their larger and more powerful neighbours.

The current system is a broken and everyone has an opinion as to why. But to answer your question, it would be extremely difficult or just plain impossible with the how the current meta game is set up in null sec.

If you really want to own space of your own, you're better off finding a nice wormhole to live in. Lots more PVP involved in wormholes and you can actually evict existing residents with enough force.

Another option would be to rent from a null sec coalition. You pay them a monthly fee and they give you a system to do what you will with (with some rules and caveats).

Maybe one day CCP will change things so that new entities have a chance to break into null sec and fight for their own space. Until that day comes, join an existing coalition, rent from them, or just go live in a wormhole.

Best free null right now is U1F-86. You get 2 nice plasma planets and 53 moons. Plus other stuff. EH-HXW is still free as well. You have 33 moons to work with.
