The futility of Eve On-line

Here's a situation for you Mr/Mrs/Miss Eve player.

Hard day at work - you want to unwind - have some personal time. After spending quality time with the family, you like to kick back and enjoy time with your internet buds and your internet spaceships.

You play Eve to relax - but you like to achieve progress in whatever you do.

You have played Eve for a while, you understand how to stay in your pod, make ships to fight in and make ISK to buy more stuff cos those internet ships cost.

You know how to mine, know how to manufacture, how to mission and plex and you enjoy spending time doing ISK making stuff with your corp.

Expanding is an option - but what to do.

Then you read an article and realise that you cannot expand because of the current situation in Eve. Your corp doesn't want to join them because they are known scammers, and although their tactics for exploiting the game are impressive - douchbags are still douchbags.

Time to move on?

Oh - the article?

Say no more....

If you define expanding and having fun in EVE solely as gaining sov, and you don't want to join any corp/alliance which is large or powerful enough (including allies) to do something like that, then yes, all is futile.

I am playing EVE very casually, and I am in a corp and alliance I'd call medium-sized at best, compared to what I see elsewhere number-wise. More like a small alliance. We still have sov, even if not a lot, and I am accepted and welcome despite my casual playing.

Aside from that I am pretty sure there is tons of other stuff one can do in EVE which has nothing to do with SOV nullsec.

I don't think that narrow view of expanding in the game has affected players like Chribba.

There are other examples of player built empires and near monopolies that don't involve holding sov (eg. frog freight services, somer, EOH, etc.).

Sov is not necessarily the end game.

Sov is just one castle in the sandbox, there's plenty of other castles. It all comes down to what type of castle you want.

Wormholes and lowsec are there for you. Not only more accessible to smaller groups, but also infinitely more fun.

Some castles are not meant for relaxing.

I am just here to snuggle and do spy stuff.

This right here is your problem. You're focused on good times and happy memories with your internet friends. Your competition is focused on winning.

Again, you're focused on good times while they're focused on winning. Calling your competition names doesn't change the fact that they're winning and you're not.

If you want to expand beyond your current EvE existence, then stop playing for good times with your friends and start playing to win. Or just accept the fact that you're a loser like the rest of us.

In a GAME where WINNING is impossible - how does one WIN?

SOV is terrible. aside from having your name on the map it is totally pointless. There's a reason why PL rents out all their SOV rather than living in it.

Consider yourself lucky.

It seems I missed the ccp message that said "You win eve by..."

Eve is a sandbox, if you want to win something somehow you first ´have to decide what you want to win. There is no global winning condition. But if winning for you means to have sov, but you are unwilling to do what needs to be done to get sov then well that sucks for you...I guess.

There is no universally acceptable way to 'win' Eve. But this doesn't mean there is no competition and no goals to achieve. You could say that thanks to the open way EvE plays, the competition is much more cut-throat then most other MMO's that have defined goals like max level or top gear raids.

In EvE, the goals are many & diverse, sov is just one of those, marketplay another, etc. To be the among the best in any given goal in EvE, you need to dedicate alot of time for it. However, there's plenty of corporations out there who don't aim to be 'The Best' but aim for fun times (note, The Best players can also be fun to hang out with, as you all share a common goal, they're just more dedicated)

In the end, you have to decide what you want in eve: To be the best? Then you'll have to sacrifice some things in order to achieve it. Want to play it for good times with friends and relaxed play, you also have to make choices.
Just as in real-life, you cannot be succesful and have a laid-back life at the same time.

PS: I'm competing in the EvE reporting business, while I'm not yet in the league of the big boys, I managed to carve out my niche, it just needs some dedication & help from friends. So yes, there's more, much more then just Sov to compete over!

So you're a casual player, like me. Where does wresting & holding Sov come into enjoying the game? Envying the wealth and assets of the hardcore playerbase will just lead you to misery.

TLDR; enjoy the game.

I have started asking what people mean when they say certain words, and so now I will ask you.

What is your definition of successful

and then...

How do you define success in Eve

then to top that all off, please do the same with "a laid-back life"
