I manage nurses and carers.

When I try to explain my fascination with eve, they reach for the restraints and sedatives.

Eve is the dark haired, totally hot emo gothchild of the gaming community

I'm a developer, so conversations at work drift around to games quite a lot when we're at lunch or whatever. I have no idea what they are talking about most of the time. Before I was a software Dev, I was a classical violinist, so I think most of them don't think of me as being that much of a tech nerd. But then one of them asked me if I game. And I said I play EvE. The general consensus after that was that I'm hardcore neckbeard now. And maybe a psychopath.

I kid you not, a guy walked up to me a few days after that and said, "So I heard you play eve. Man. That's crazy. Do you think you could help me with this code I'm having problems with?" Haha! No one ever asked me for help before that. Ever.

I read that last part as "Man that's crazy. You must be good with Excel." P

agreed. and i am really good at excel and stuff Cool

Did that once:

"Yarda" : Look, internet-spaceships
Colleague : You play that in a group?
"Yarda" : Yes. Awesome to see all those ships undock!
Colleague : How large should a group be before individual choices and behavior are significantly influenced by peer pressure you reckon?
"Yarda" : Cool question. Anyway, I can put any gun on my ship I want, customizing my ship to
Colleague : If we were to ask every player at what point they stop feeling like an individual but part as a group, we might be able to get some interesting data.
"Yarda" : ....
Colleague : If we can run proper statistics on it, we may be able to start questioning what personality traits influence the point at which someone is no longer making decisions for themselves, but for the group. We'd have to measure that too tho.
"Yarda" : DUDE! Spaceships man!
Colleague : Are you in a big group?

I stopped right there and went for a smoke. Never brought it up again either.

And if so, how did you bring it up in the initial conversation? How do you describe the game to them? And what reactions do you get when people find out you play EVE?

They found out, now they're afraid and they don't bother me anymore.

I've spoken to people about it at work. Some of them play online games, but I've not found anyone else who plays EVE, or understands what its about more than superficially.

Its possible there is a player out there who just hasn't revealed themselves so they can find out who my character is and gank me.

Talking about paranoia, I'm pretty sure the IT crew at my last workplace played EvE. It didn't really click untill I tried accessing other gaming websites that were blocked, but the EVE-O forums weren't...

I accept the reality of the EVE meta and the fact that the game doesn't necessarily end when I close the client.

My wife discovered she had a co worker who played EVE. I asked her to enquire who/what corp so I could go and kill him, but unfortunately he plays on the Chinese server. Sad

My Lieutenant used to play and still asks me from time to time about what's happening in EVE (seems that giving up most online gaming is now something that goes into a prenup lol, I've lost so many game friends to marriage lol).

Last year I got assigned a new (fresh out of the academy) recruit to train and during a break between calls I pulled out my lap top and started up EVEMON to check some things. He jumped up and said "don't tell me you play EVE too". I said I did and it turns out he started playing while he was in the Army.

He told me he was a "Wormholer". I told him thanks for the info but State Law doesn't allow me to ask him what his sexual orientation is Big smile . We had a good laugh about that one lol. He still plays too, I just don't see him often because he works at another division.

I am a nurse, the only male nurse in my entire building. None of my co-workers, all female in case you missed it, are gamers. One time I was asked what I do for a hobby and I attempted to explain eve to a bunch of non-gaming female nurses.

I don't believe I was understood.

Know that feels. Nurse too, and none of my co-workers "get" online gaming.

Do get to play at work sometimes, though. Kids love spaceships and explosions, so I'll hook my laptop up to the TV in our common/game room, close local, and go gank miners for awhile.

7.2 CAN I AVOID PVP COMPLETELY? No; there are no systems or locations in New Eden where PvP may be completely avoided. --Eve New Player Guide

If it weren't for all the profanity and unsuited bs they sometimes spout, you could totally have the kids talk to the miners after a gank. Would be hilarious!!!

One of my co-workers play Eve, like in missioning and mining. I tried to have him give up his char names to me so that I could gank the living **** out of him. Sadly, no luck Sad
